Is Formica the Next Big Thing (Again) for the Kitchen? | Century 21® (2024)
Once upon a time, Formica laminate was the only option for kitchencountertops. Then, it fell out of favor with homeowners as granite soared inpopularity.
But as with many previous trends, Formica is back. In fact, Architectural Digest even ran a story on its re-emergence. So,Formica is actually cool again.
But today’s Formica isn’t that shiny mid-century design you may remember. Now, Formica countertops come in patterns and edge options that make themnearly indistinguishable from real granite or marble — until you touch it.
In recognition of the new interest in laminates, FormicaCorporation recently teamed upwith Leanne Ford, aninterior designer and star of HGTV’s “Restored by the Fords,” to launch the Formica Brand Capsule Collection, a curated set of Formica surfacing productsperfect for the luxury home.
“The Formica Brand Capsule Collection features surfaces that are inspiredby natural elements and neutral colors and can be used to create a timelessspace,” said Ford. “I love the aesthetics and functionality of these surfaces. There is something for everyone.”
The collection includes four new Formica laminate designs: Nero Marquina(a black design based on marble from the region of Markina in the north ofSpain); White Knotty Maple (a raw and rustic natural woodgrain); Pietra Grafite(a classic gray stone with white veining); and Planked Raw Oak (a lightScandinavian-style woodgrain). There are also metallics and designs with recycledleather veneers.
“I like to mix materials in my designs and try new things in unexpectedways,” said Ford. She suggests using the DecoMetal laminates to create aglamorous headboard or the dECOLeather to create shelving in a home office.
Prices range from $19 to $25 per square foot installed.

is back. In fact, Architectural Digest even ran a story on its re-emergence. So, Formica is actually cool again. But today's Formica isn't that shiny mid-century design you may remember.
According to Formica Corporation, one of the leading manufacturers of laminate, more consumers than ever are interested in the material—the brand has seen a nearly three times increase in the number of residential laminate samples requested between 2021 and 2023.

Quartz: While quartz countertops may present a higher upfront cost compared to Formica, they offer exceptional value over time. The durability, longevity, and timeless beauty of quartz can enhance the overall value of your home, making it a wise investment in your property's future.
Sintered stone slabs are on the rise as kitchen countertop trends 2024. This extremely hardwearing countertop material is a type of manufactured stone that is highly practical due to its heat-resistant and stain-resistant properties. Moreover, it comes in a range of natural stone-look designs.
The only drawback is that Formica isn't as durable as other countertops. It's only heat resistant up to 275 degrees Fahrenheit for a short period of time, and it's prone to scratches.
On average, laminate countertops can last between 10 and 15 years. However, this can vary depending on the quality of the material, the care and maintenance given, and the use they endure. Some laminate countertops that are of a higher quality and have been installed professionally can last up to 20 years or more.
Affordability: The typical cost per square foot of installed granite may be roughly $120, while Formica® Brand Laminate costs between $14 and $38 per square foot installed. Sink options: Yes, you can have an undermount sink!
The official Formica site suggests treating post-formed material no higher than 177 degrees Celsius (or 350.6 degrees Fahrenheit). We offer versions of this material in grades ranging from 82 to 86, using metals such as aluminum, copper, and steel.
What is the most popular countertop? Quartz remains top of the wishlist for kitchen countertops. Quartz worktops are made from engineered stone – a combination of ground quartz, resins and polymers to create a really tough material.
Quartz is one of the strongest materials you can use, making it one of the best-value countertops available. Both scratch- and stain-resistant, quartz countertops can look brand new for years even after withstanding heavy usage.
Natural stone surfaces continue to be a top choice for homeowners in 2024, offering timeless beauty and durability. Again, the most practical way to clean and polish your counter or tabletop is with a dry, clean, non-abrasive microfiber cloth and a little elbow grease. You can also use Hope's Perfect Countertop spray and wipe wax to polish Formica® laminate and give it an extra shine.
But it was in the optimistic postwar world of the 1940s and 50s that Formica came into its own as a cheap and cheerful surface. It exuded the popular streamline styling of the day, with an endless catalogue of exotic patterns, bright colours and woodgrain effects.
