If you get a call from someone asking you to move or send money via cryptocurrency, it’s ascam! The scammer may scare you into thinking your money isn’t safe or a loved one is in trouble, but no matter the story, there’s never a legit reason for someone to send you to a cryptocurrency ATM, likeBitcoin.
Scammers will give you step-by-step instructions for how to convert your money into crypto and may direct you to send it by scanning a QR code, which directs the payment right into their digitalwallet. They demand payment in crypto, knowing that once you deposit money into a cryptocurrency ATM, it’s gone for good and cannot berecovered.
It’s important to note that neither cryptocurrency nor the ATM will protect yourmoney. Cryptocurrency is a type of digital currency that generally exists only electronically and is NOT insured by the government like traditionalcurrency. The government has no obligation to step in and help get your money back since cryptocurrency payments are not legallyprotected.
