Thailand is generally safe for solo female travelers. However, exercising common sense and staying aware of the surroundings are important. The locals are friendly and helpful, but, as in any place, it's important to be cautious of who to trust. Be careful with belongings and avoid venturing out alone at night, especially in quieter areas. Majority of the people are respectful, friendly and will help if you're in need.

Is Thailand Safe for Solo Female Travelers? (18)

How safe is Thailand?

Is Thailand Safe for Solo Female Travelers? (19)

Safety at night:Moderate

While Thailand is generally considered a safe destination, night time can bring certain risks particularly in major cities and tourist areas. Cases of petty crime such as pickpocketing and theft are commonplace. Some areas are poorly lit and pedestrians have to be careful. Women, especially, should be cautious about their intake of alcohol and mindful of their belongings and wearing modest clothing to respect local customs. Traveling in groups is advised over walking alone.

Is Thailand Safe for Solo Female Travelers? (20)

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Thailand is generally reliable and safe. This includes transportation such as city buses, taxis, tuk-tuks, songthaews, and Bangkok’s BTS Sky Train System and MRT Subway. There's an established culture of respect towards women in public spaces, including on public transportation. However, it's important to use common sense while using public transportation, in particularly crowded or late-night situations. Keep an eye on your belongings at all times, be aware of your surroundings, and try sticking to well-lit areas.

Is Thailand Safe for Solo Female Travelers? (21)

Street harassment:Low

Thailand is generally considered safe and respectful towards solo female travelers. While there might be occasional catcalling or unsolicited comments, it's not a widespread issue. Most locals show great respect towards visitors and are often very helpful. Nonetheless, as anywhere, it's advisable to maintain a level of caution, especially at night in less crowded areas. You may encounter touts trying to sell you something or directing you to shops, which is a common form of annoyance rather than harassment in tourist heavy areas. Thai culture is relatively conservative and dressing modestly can often help reduce unwanted attention.

Is Thailand Safe for Solo Female Travelers? (22)

Petty crimes:Moderate

While there is a risk for petty crimes such as pickpocketing or bag-snatching particularly in crowded areas or tourist hotspots, Thailand generally has a relatively safe environment for travelers if precautions are taken. Always keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings to further lower your risks for such incidents.

Thailand, Solo travel

I’ve always loved Thailand especially as a solo traveling female… it really is a very safe place for women compared to other places… the nature is absolutely stunning and the cities are so much fun! I don’t love the general islands so much (I like to call them Disneyland for drunk adults) but there are some hidden gems where you can have just as much fun

Spent four nights here at Ko Samui! Beautiful island with friendly people! This was a great place to relax and laze around the pool or jump into ocean! I felt safe at all times, did not feel any danger at all.

Thailand, Solo travel

My first solo trip in Asia, and it was incredible! I was very scared to go solo, but as soon as I landed in Bangkok, and checked in in my hostel, that disappeared. I was so well received by dozens of other solo travelers. There’s always some activity happening and group going out, so you don’t really feel alone. I traveled from north to south, and checked some cool spots. What I would say is: the islands of the southeast side should be your N1 priority. They are gorgeous, way less crowded and more natural. It’s just breathtaking, cheap and a good vibe. I did Chiang Mai in the north, which was amazing because of the festival of flowers that it was happening, but the islands in the south or way better. phu*ket is not very nice (older Russian everywhere…). Phi phi island was cool for the diving, the excursions and the parties, but zero nature in the island. Definitely go and enjoy! I feel like is one of the best places to solo travel as a women in Asia. Felt really safe (stayed in female rooms in hostels, only went out at night in groups - with at least one female, etc)

I've never felt safer than in Bangkok, and Thai people are the most friendly ppl, I recommend visiting Bangkok when you come to Thailand, for more than a few days, 3 days isn't enough to discover the city.

Safest country in South East Asia by far. I lived there for 4 years including the time during Covid. The culture, food, nature and travel community is what inspired me to live there for so long. I studied Buddhism & yoga in-depth as well as cultivated the courage to facilitate others in yoga & meditation. Forever grateful for that experience

Chiang Rai

It is a smaller, rural city filled with beautiful temples. There are number of other travellers and expats living there as well. I have felt safe in Chiang Rai (and all over Thailand for that matter), as the people are very warm, welcoming and friendly, as one would expect in a predominately Buddhist country.

Bangkok

Very safe you can walk alone at night but just be smart. What's not safe is the sidewalk because they're not well made. They're made to break down shortly for corruption procurement. Traffic can be quite heavy in many areas and Thais do not respect road rules so you could get hit by anything any time.

Thailand was fun. We stayed in phu*ket for most of the stay. We wanted the beach and to party. It’s a great place for that, it’s inexpensive to travel there and you find very nice people in the hostels if that’s the kind of travels you like. Great beginner place to travel in Asia
