Yes, it is legal to install/use Linux on a Mac.
The Ubuntu community is a good starting point on how-to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook
Since you are a starter/learner with Linux I would still recommend to use the free VirtualBox and use Linux through virtualization.
Much easier to get rid of it if you want/need to than when having it installed natively.

I would second Fortuny's suggestings regarding going with a virtual machine as well as using the free VirtualBox. If you're new to Linux, manually setting up partitions can be complicated. Most modern distributions do a nice job with automatically setting up the partitions for you, but you may accidentally take over your entire drive. It's also a good idea to understand how the partitioning works (it's somewhat different from Windows or OS X). With a virtual install, you can futz around... mess up... start over, etc... all without having to worry about causing any problems with your OS X installation.

I know that you can run Linux on a mac, it is not illegal. As far as the other questions, we have a few Linux experts in here who will be able to give you the other details.
