Sean CarterSpeaking on this book alone, apart from the trilogy or series because I haven't read them all yet, there is romance. It certainly doesn't take center-stage for most of the book but the romance that is there is very true-to-life. I've never been so excited about one event and then so heart-broken over the next. So, while it is not the focus, it is there and it is very real which is refreshing compared to the millions of books where love just seems so easy or fake or sex-driven.
Nicole Deyerlthere is! Robin Hobb knows how to tug the heart strings in every direction. Her character building is amazing. No other author I've encountered has been able to breathe life into the page as she has. If you end up finishing this trilogy and moving on to Liveship Traders, the plot will thicken with more points of view, and you'll find yourself empathizing with the good and bad guys. When I read the assassin's trilogy, it was so good that I felt I must've never read a good book in my life, and even more so with Liveship Traders!
TL;DR: there's a lot of romance in the assassin's books (but think quality over quantity), as well as the liveship trader trilogy.
ReaderI'm going to disagree with the other answers and say, no. There isn't really any romance in this book. There is a character that the main character is interested in, but that's about as far as it goes. I haven't read the other books in the series so maybe this is foundation for a romance component in the future, but if you're looking for romance out of THIS BOOK, you won't find it.
