On hypergamy, the male breadwinner trope, and what we still misunderstand about the two
To some people, Jeff Bezos, currently the third-wealthiest person on this planet, is the epitome of ‘winning at life’. Or rather, ‘winning at capitalism.’
That’s because ever since he shed his geeky persona and divorced his ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, he seems to spend most of his time partying with celebrities, touring around the world in a $500 million megayacht, and… demanding historic bridges to be dismantled so that it can go through.
Right. Totally normal behaviour. I couldn’t help but notice, though, that people building online shrines to him and other billionaires are mostly men. In particular, young men and teenage boys.
Sure, Bezos’s lifestyle does seem like something straight out of a teenage boy’s dream. But you’d think that for all the talk about how wealth and social status are more important or attractive to women than anything else, there would be quite a few women swooning over him with comparable intensity and dedication.
And teenage girls would have posters of Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk or other billionaires plastered on their walls.
