Elden Ring has taken home the coveted Game of the Year prize from The Game Awards 2022 ceremony. The Game Awards are always a huge event for players, filled with a myriad of upcoming game announcements alongside accolades given to stellar titles from throughout the year. While there are other game awards shows with prizes that carry a fair amount of weight in their own right, The Game Awards contains some of the most anticipated and respected honors given each year.
While Elden Ring's director doesn't understand its hit status, the industry certainly does, crowning the RPG Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022. The award was announced by the director of last year's GOTY-winning title It Takes Two, Josef Fares. In his speech, Director Miyazaki thanked fans as well as author George R.R. Martin, who helped create the massive lore included in the game.

GOTY Was Always Between Elden Ring & God of War Ragnarök
While many solid titles were nominated for Game of the Year in 2022, like the long-awaited sequel A Plague Tale: Requiem and the indie-darling cat game Stray, many players considered the fight for the coveted GOTY award to truly be between Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarök. Out of every nominee at The Game Awards, these two games were hands-down some of the most anticipated titles of the year, and they seem to have more than lived up to the hype surrounding them. Both received stellar reviews and contained a huge scale of story and world that made them the two true contenders from the start.
Elden Ring joins the list of incredible games that have won GOTY in the past. Previous winners include the delightful Hazelight co-op game It Takes Two, CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II. Another FromSoftware title, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has won previously as well, now being joined by Elden Ring.
The ceremony's host Geoff Keighley promised that The Game Awards 2022 would be very special, and the event has certainly lived up to those standards. Players got to see many fun new announcements for upcoming titles while also celebrating what's been released over the course of this year. Now that Elden Ring has taken home the prize, many players may be wondering what's next for the series. Players just got new Elden Ring DLC earlier this week, with more likely to come down the line, giving fans a lot to look forward to. Whatever the future has in store, most fans can agree Elden Ring was incredibly deserving of taking home the title at this year's Game Awards.
