Why is Jacob's Well a haunted location?

Located in Wimberley, Jacob's Wellis a little scary for more than just its haunted lore. It is known as a potentially dangerous spot for divers, thanks to its series of chambers and the thick, sticky soil at the bottom.

According to the Houston Chronicle, at least 12 people have died trying to explore the treacherous waters, making it the prime haunting grounds for restless spirits who met a tragic end. None were certified cave divers with the proper equipment, said Gregg Tatum, Jacob's Well Exploration Project director.

Some thrill-seekers come to the infamously dangerous sinkhole looking for hints that drowned spirits still inhabit the spot.

Thousands visit Jacob's Well in Texas. But only these divers have seen its true depths.

Why is Jacob's Well so dangerous?

The sinkhole houses an underwater cave system 140 feet deep and over 4,300 feet long, fed by an artesian spring.

Inside the well are three tunnels — the principal tunnel, "A tunnel"; a secondary passageway, "B tunnel"; and the "C tunnel," which is not diveable, said Tatum. The "A tunnel" is 4,500 feet long, he said.A tough part of the cave includes a tight restriction that divers have to squeeze through.

The dive is not for everyone — project members have to get approval from Hays County before they can go down.

Jacob's Well is more than a swimming destination

It is home to many animals — quail, roadrunners, turkeys, water snakes, sunfish, Guadalupe bass, crawfish and blind salamanders have all been known to live in and around the water.

The well also is the longest cave in Hays County and the second-longest fully submerged cave in Texas.

When is Jacob's Well open?

Roughly 100,000 visit the well and its surrounding park every year, said Jay Taylor, parks lead at Hays County Parks.

Jacob's Well Natural Area is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Swimming is not currently allowed but visitors can enjoy hiking and viewing of the spring.
