I had the pleasure of testing this beauty in Sydney, and let me tell you, it exceeded all expectations. After a week of driving it from Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula, I can vouch for its exceptional build quality, comfort, and practicality.
The J5 EV's exterior design is a sight to behold. With its squared-off grille and sleek surfacing, it exudes a European vibe, reminiscent of the Evoque. This is no surprise, given Jaecoo's premium positioning and focus on adventure-ready vehicles.
Step inside, and you'll be greeted by a spacious interior, a massive 1.45-square-metre glass moonroof, and a 13.2-inch vertical touchscreen. The synthetic silicone seats, marketed as pet-friendly, are a highlight, offering scratch and stain resistance. After a week of coastal adventures and coffee runs, they proved easy to maintain, a testament to their durability.
The J5's interior space is impressive, with a completely flat floor in the back, making it a comfortable five-seater. Boot space is ample, and the false floor offers two levels, providing a total of 480 litres of storage, plus a useful 35-litre Frunk.
Under the hood, a zippy 155 kW motor delivers up to 288 Nm of torque, ensuring a smooth and responsive drive. The car sprints from 0-100 km/h in just over 7.7 seconds, making it a joy to overtake or navigate city traffic.
The regenerative braking system offers three settings, and while I preferred the low regen mode, the high mode could use some refinement to provide a smoother experience. However, with Jaecoo's commitment to software updates, this is an area that can be improved upon.
In terms of range, the J5 boasts a 58.9 kWh LFP battery, offering an official WLTP range of 402 km. During my mixed driving week, I achieved a real-world range of around 370 km, which is impressive for this price point. Charging is a breeze, with AC speeds of up to 9.5 kW and DC speeds of up to 130 kW, ensuring you're never far from a full charge.
Jaecoo's commitment to customer satisfaction is evident with an eight-year unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty, eight years of capped-price servicing, and an eight-year battery warranty.
