Open Access

Among the critical objectives of the JAMA Network is to publish and disseminate research, review, and opinion of the highest quality to a global audience. Our commitment to open access affirms this goal by making our content discoverable, widely disseminated and accessible, and free for everyone to read.

Journal Information

Open Access Journals

Two JAMA Network journals are fully open access. All articles in these journals are published under a Creative Commons (CC) license.

Hybrid Journals

All of JAMA Network’s Specialty journals offer authors of research articles the option to publish the article open access. Original Investigations, Research Letters, and Brief Reports are eligible for open access. Nonresearch articles are not eligible for open access.

Licenses, Copyright, and Permissions

Authors who wish to publish open access research articles in JAMA Network journals will be offered a Creative Commons (CC) license in exchange for payment of an article processing charge. The CC licenses, often required by funders, allow authors to retain copyright of their research articles.

An open access article is free for everyone to read immediately and can be distributed without permission, provided that appropriate credit is given.

Information provided by the author during the submission process will determine the appropriate CC license. Most authors will receive a CC-BY license, which offers the broadest reuse rights. Authors who report a commercial funding source will receive a CC-BY-NC-ND license.

CC-BY License:Permits others to distribute, remix, tweak, and build on the work, even commercially, without permission, provided that credit is given to the original authors and journal.

CC-BY-NC-ND License:Permits others to distribute the work without permission, provided that credit is given to the original authors and journal and that the article is not altered or used commercially.

Article Processing Charges (APCs), Waivers, and Discounts

APCs

JAMA Network Open and JAMA Health Forum: The corresponding author will be billed $3000 USD. These are fully open access journals. Authors are expected to coordinate payment of the APC for every research article accepted for publication.

JAMA Network Specialty Journals: The corresponding author will be billed $5000 USD. Authors can decline open access and agree to the JAMA Network’s standard Publishing Agreement, which requires transfer of copyright. After 12 months, the research article will be freely accessible online on the journal website and in PubMed Central (PMC).

Waivers and Discounts

Waivers are offered based on the country of residence of the corresponding authors. Waivers and discounts are available for authors from a core list of countries in the developing world as defined by the World Health Organization as part of their Research4Life program. Open Access Policy

• What types of articles are eligible to be published open access?

  JAMA Network Open and JAMA Health Forum are completely open access journals. All articles appearing in these journals are published under a Creative Commons (CC) license. For JAMA Network Specialty Journals, Original Investigations, Research Letters, and Brief Reports are eligible for open access.

• Does JAMA have an open access option?

  JAMAdoes not offer the option to publish an article under an open access license. Research published inJAMAis free to read 6 months online after publication date and is available in PubMed Central (PMC).

• What happens if my article was submitted to JAMA and transferred to another JAMA Network journal?

  During the transfer process, the author has the opportunity to request open access in the journal to which the article has been transferred.

• If I do not choose open access, how can I share my article? Can I post my “accepted manuscript” online?

  Authors of original research investigations can deposit their accepted manuscript in a public repository of their choosing immediately on the day that the manuscript is published by JAMA Network.

• Does my request for open access have an impact on the peer review process?

  No. The editors reviewing articles in JAMA Network Specialty Journals do not know whether an author has requested open access until after the article is accepted for publication.

• What if I cannot pay the APC?

  For JAMA Network Open and JAMA Health Forum these are fully open access journals. Authors are expected to coordinate payment of the APC for every research article accepted for publication. A very limited number of APC reductions and waivers may be granted to authors whose research is not funded and for which funds are not available from institutions, departments, coauthors, or elsewhere. Requests for this consideration should be made to the editorial office, not the decision-making editor, during the revision stage. For JAMA Network Specialty Journals there are no discounts available. If an author cannot pay the APC, the article may be published under the JAMA Network’s standard Publishing Agreement, which requires transfer of copyright.

• Are there discounts for the APC?

• What should I expect during the billing process?

  JAMA Network works with Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) to process all payments. After an article is accepted, Copyright Clearance Center will send an email to the corresponding author with information about how to access the payment portal. Authors may choose to pay by credit card or to create an invoice. Invoices may be forwarded to an institution, funder, or other author for payment.

• How do I know if my institution has a special billing agreement with JAMA Network?

  A special billing agreement, also known as transformative agreements or open access agreements is an agreement that JAMA Network has entered with an institution to support open access publication. During the submission process you’ll get a message if your institution has already paid the APC.
