A legendary farewell: John Williamson's final performance at Tamworth Country Music Festival.
A Country Music Icon's Journey
For John Williamson, Tamworth evokes memories beyond the famous festival. It was a rugby match that left an early impression, resulting in a broken shoulder and a lasting reminder in the form of a wire. But over the years, his memories transformed into a celebration of country music, golden guitars, and the iconic cowboy boots.
"I recall the old legends, Slim Dusty and Buddy Williams, still performing. That's where it all began," he reminisces.
A Festival Legacy
After nearly five decades, Williamson is set to bid farewell to the Tamworth stage. He's been an integral part of the festival's evolution, having co-founded the Country Music Association of Australia, ensuring the festival remained a platform for musicians.
"I reflect on the diverse experiences and friends I've made in Tamworth. I'm grateful for what it has done for Aussie songs," he shares.
A New Chapter
While stepping away from the festival, Williamson's musical journey continues. He plans to write and record, but also looks forward to spending time with family.
"I've been in the business for 56 years, and I'm tired of being away from home. I might do the occasional local gig, but the constant travel and airports have taken their toll," he confesses.
Embracing the Unknown
Williamson admits uncertainty about his feelings post-performance, but aims to end on a positive note.
"It's important to retire while you're still delivering strong shows. I want to leave on a high."
Passing the Torch
And here's where it gets controversial... Williamson is ready to pass the baton to the next generation of Australian country music artists. He encourages them to stay true to their roots and sing about their experiences.
"It's time for the young ones to take the lead. Keep it Australian, be authentic, and tell our stories. Let's ensure Aussie stories continue to thrive."
