‘Aquaman’ star Amber Heard has finally paid her dues to ex-husband Johnny Depp. Acting on the orders of a court in Virginia (USA), Heard paid Depp $1 million. With this payment, the pair have successfully settled the ongoing defamation suit.
The jury had initially awarded the ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ star $10 million in compensatory and $5 million in punitive damages. Heard was awarded $2 million in compensation.
However, in December, the estranged couple reached an agreement and Heard agreed to pay $1 million to the ‘Edward Scissorhands’ star. Later Heard took to Instagram and wrote that she had finally found a way to move on from the ordeal. “Now I finally have an opportunity to emancipate myself from something I attempted to leave over six years ago and on terms I can agree to. I have made no admission. This is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or gags with respect to my voice moving forward,” she wrote.
Referring to the financial implications of the agreement, the ‘Zombieland’ star said that it’s sadly not uncommon for women who open up about their abuse to become ‘bankrupt’. “I cannot afford to risk an impossible bill - one that is not just financial, but also psychological, physical, and emotional. Women shouldn't have to face abuse or bankruptcy for speaking her truth, but unfortunately, it is not uncommon," she wrote.
According to a TMZ report, Depp has decided to donate the money to charities. The cash will be evenly split up between five organisations. Each tackling various issues such as caring for terminally ill children, rehabilitation of marginalised communities, preserving ecosystems, etc.
