WA's only Spanish-language TV station, Univision, will shut down by the end of this year by Sinclair Broadcasts Group, which also owns KOMO TV. In a news release in September, Sinclair announced that CW Networks would start with the call letters, KUNS. What the release didn't say was KUNS has been Univision Seattle 2007 and that there'd be no more Univision. The Seattle Times Nina Shapiro reported this story. My dear friend, Teresa Jones, the first advertising rep for Univision Seattle who just retired earlier this year, was quoted as saying she didn’t “understand why Sinclair decided to pull the plug on Univision Seattle. Advertising, she said, “was easy to sell because the brand is so famous.” She estimates she earned about $10 million for the company in her time there.”How is this possible not to have Spanish language TV when Latinos are the second largest minority group in King County and largest in the state? It's not clear what will happen to the six employees of Univision. I care about this because my earliest community building effort was creating a ethnic media coalition called Sea Beez, which was part of the now defunct New America Media, an ethnic media version of the The Associated Press. The Hispanic community had its own robust association too. My family still owns a Vietnamese newspaper that still limps along. Luis Navarro great quote in that story! It’s seems based on real data. The last decade one of the most blue states is going backwards in equity and inclusion. Not forward. 2024 will be a renewal of the efforts of equity-advocacy in business and public contracting. Calling on media friends of Latino descent in particular. The voices of many matter; voices of all communities is the start of equity and inclusion.

I'm so sorry to read about this situation - such a tragic loss...AND - unfortunately - knowing Sinclair Broadcasting is behind the shut down, their decision to shut down Univision falls very much in line with their practices, philosophies, and intentions....Another vital message here is: understand what/who leads the businesses behind the media that is available - and what they are attempting to achieve....

Those who routinely post videos, make podcasts or write about news or current affairs online could be classified as “digital news broadcasters”, as per the latest second draft of the Broadcasting Bill 2024.Besides proposing to bring content creators under its ambit, the new draft of the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, 2024 also defines “news and current affairs programmes” to include “texts” apart from “audio, visual or audio-visual content, sign, signals, writing, images” which are “transmitted directly or using a broadcasting network”.The bill significantly expands the definition of "intermediary" to include internet service providers, social media platforms, online search engines, and marketplaces. It mandates these intermediaries to provide data to the Central government concerning OTT broadcasters and digital news broadcasters.A crucial change pertains to provisions aimed at regulating online advertising by creating the category of ‘advertising intermediaries’.It is not clear if sponsored posts by influencers, which are considered ads under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, are also covered under this bill. The Broadcasting Bill, first introduced in November last year, is likely to replace the Cable Television Networks Act of 1995. It has been under scrutiny for proposing to give ‘inordinate powers’ to the government to control the news media. The Network of Women in Media, India (NWMI) has also raised concerns about the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, 2024. In its submission to the Information & Broadcasting Ministry, the NWMI argued that the bill could lead to excessive control and over-regulation of both traditional and digital media....#india #digital #digitalmedia #media #ashwinivaishnaw #press #media #bjp #narendramodi #parliament #rahulgandhi #pressfreedom #broadcastingbill #news #politics

Why BBC doesn’t earn from tv advertising? The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) does not earn revenue from traditional advertising because it is primarily funded through a television license fee paid by UK households. This funding model is designed to ensure that the BBC remains independent and free from commercial and political influence, allowing it to provide unbiased and high-quality content. Here are the key reasons why the BBC does not rely on advertising for revenue:Public Funding Model: The BBC is funded by the TV license fee, which is a mandatory payment by UK households that watch or record live TV broadcasts or use the iPlayer service. This fee is intended to support the production of content that serves the public interest without commercial pressures.Editorial Independence: By avoiding commercial advertising, the BBC can maintain editorial independence. This allows it to produce content that is not influenced by advertisers' interests, ensuring unbiased news coverage and diverse programming.Public Service Remit: The BBC has a public service remit to inform, educate, and entertain. This mandate includes providing a wide range of content for different audiences, including minority groups, without the need to cater to advertisers' preferences or target demographics that are most lucrative for advertising revenue.Regulatory Environment: The BBC operates under a Royal Charter, which outlines its purpose and governance. The Charter includes provisions that limit the role of advertising and commercial activities to ensure the BBC's focus remains on public service broadcasting.Competition with Commercial Broadcasters: By not competing for advertising revenue, the BBC can coexist with commercial broadcasters in the UK. This distinction helps maintain a balanced media landscape, where public service content is available alongside commercially funded programming. In addition to the license fee, the BBC does generate some revenue from its commercial subsidiaries, such as BBC Studios, which sells BBC content worldwide and engages in other commercial activities. However, these operations are kept separate from the core public service broadcasting funded by the license fee.#bbc #tvlicense #tvadvertising #advertising

Armenian Public Television, commonly known as H1, has taken a noteworthy step this week by inaugurating an office in Los Angeles, marking its expansion into one of the largest Armenian communities beyond the country’s borders. Its Los Angeles operation will be called First Channel America (@firstchannelamerica ). Operated and financially supported by the present Armenian government, Armenian Public Television’s expansion into Los Angeles can be interpreted as a deliberate effort to enhance its influence within the diaspora.Armenian Public Television’s undeniably close ties with the current government have further fueled skepticism and distrust among the citizens of Armenia, many of whom label the station as a mouthpiece for government propaganda. Following the 2020 War in Artsakh, in 2021 the Armenian government decided to allocate significant funds to the Public Broadcaster’s Council, amounting to nearly a million US dollars (427.7 million drams). This raised concerns about the station’s independence and impartiality. Moreover, even before the 2020 War in Artsakh, in February 2020, the government approved the legislative initiative of the government regarding the draft of the RA law “On Amendments and Additions to the RA Law On Television and Radio,” giving the right to broadcast advertisem*nts to the Public Television Company.Government funding and entering the advertising market with government backing gave Armenian Public Television substantial competitive advantages, pushing competitors like opposition media out of the market. Meanwhile, the Armenian government continues to periodically crack down on media outlets that are critical of the government’s recent decisions to warm relations with neighboring Turkey and Azerbaijan.[continued in comments]

https://lnkd.in/gHwEFM6H Borrell cites several reasons why #radio remains resilient while newspapers have been in decline since the mid-2000s, hit hard as Americans consume news digitally. Radio awakened to the internet, and it has the largest sales force of any #localmedia channel. As the last #local #media impacted by the web, radio learned valuable lessons from observing how newspapers, TV and the Yellow Pages were affected by the digital revolution, Elliott added. In February Borrell and the RAB will issue their annual digital revenue benchmarking report, which will show that radio industry revenue (including digital) has been increasing since 2020. “There's visual proof that they have turned a corner,” Borrell said. Added Elliott, “In 2024, one out of every five radio dollars is going to be something digital.” Now, some radio stations have launched hyperlocal websites to help fill the void created by news deserts around the country. Based on Borrell’s local advertiser survey, “the more savvy a local advertiser/marketer is, the more likely they are to buy radio,” Elliott noted.Asked what a typical radio station might look like 10 years from now, Farber said one thing that won’t change is the importance of being local. “I think the more that broadcasters can focus in on their local community, that is key. And there should be no question when you're listening to a local radio station what city you're in, and that you know what you're listening to.” However she predicted that broadcasters will find new ways to monetize their content so stations aren’t running the lengthy spot breaks they’re saddled with today. And with the U.S. population continuing to become more diverse, Farber expects that diversity will be reflected in the programming radio offers.WithMike Hulvey set to take over as President and CEOof the radio advocacy and sales training organization on April 30, Farber said the Neuhoff Media CEO brings a different background and skillsets to the RAB but they both share the same passion. “He loves this business as much as I do. He's passionate about it. He understands the importance of what it is to be a strong local broadcaster,” Farber said. “He also understands the importance of maintaining a great group of people around him, and allowing them to do their job as best as they can. Our job is to help set the strategy, keep it moving, but get out of the way and let people do their jobs.”

A Call for Substance in Radio BroadcastingIn recent times, the landscape of radio content production has undergone a noticeable shift, and it begs the question – where is the 'information' factor? As a dedicated consumer of radio content, I often find myself yearning for substance amidst the sea of trendy yet inconsequential topics dominating the airwaves. It's become apparent that many content producers are increasingly drawing inspiration solely from social media trends, resulting in a stream of topics that lack depth and significance. While I acknowledge the importance of staying current and engaging with popular culture, the oversaturation of light and nonsensical content is diluting the essence of radio.Today, the pride of many content producers seems to revolve around securing celebrity interviews, often at the expense of meaningful content. It's disheartening to see a shift away from informative and thought-provoking discussions toward a more superficial approach that merely scratches the surface. As someone who tunes in to radio to stay informed and enlightened, I find myself disappointed more often than not. The prevalence of 'o jewa ke eng' open-ended questions, lifted directly from social media, seems to have become a go-to formula. This leaves listeners craving substance, a genuine exchange of ideas, and a more insightful exploration of the world around us.I believe it's time for a reevaluation of content production standards in the radio industry. We can strike a balance between being entertaining and informative, ensuring that our listeners walk away not only entertained but enriched with valuable knowledge.Let's challenge content producers to dig deeper, to explore topics that truly matter, and to bring back the 'information' factor that makes radio an invaluable medium. It's not about abandoning the lightheartedness that makes radio enjoyable; rather, it's about infusing substance into the conversations, creating content that resonates and leaves a lasting impact. What are your thoughts on the current state of radio content? How can we collectively encourage a shift towards more substantial discussions?#RadioContent #ContentProduction #Broadcasting

A new draft broadcasting services (regulation) bill has sparked widespread concerns over increased censorship at a time when India’s media landscape is under intense political and commercial pressure. The draft bill aims to bring digital content creators under the ambit of government regulations. Online shows on YouTube and other digital platforms, whose content is deemed as current affairs or news, will need to register with the government, follow rules typically in place for television channels, and set up internal committees to monitor standards. Content creators will need to do all of this at their own cost. Failure to follow the rules could attract heavy, potentially crippling, fines. Many influential and popular online content creators work on shoestring budgets, often without professional equipment and studios — infrastructure that they cannot afford.

As the Broadcasting Services Bill may undergo an unofficial burial there are still other pertinent issues that need to be looked at.1) Although the Broadcasting Services Bill has been withdrawn, the provisions that impose a censorship on OTT platforms and social media platforms essentially serving the same goal under IT rules 2021, remain. These provisions, currently being challenged in the Supreme Court, have inadvertently driven platforms toward self-censorship and consumers of content - the citizens have not been considered as an important stakeholder in drafting such provisions.2) As stated by the official in the article, the IT Rules include provisions to remove 'objectionable content' from social media platforms and the platforms rarely object to takedown orders and have to comply in fear of maintaining their safe harbour and protecting themselves from any legal action.3) The Bill may very well be revived in a different form or the earlier draft which also imposed wide restrictions and censorship may be brought back. Thus citizens needs to continue being vigilant that similar provisions aren't imposed through other similar legislations.4) The withdrawal of the Bill leaves unresolved questions about the commitments made in the initial draft, particularly regarding the accessibility guidelines for making broadcasting services accessible for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). It is imperative that content, from parliamentary proceedings to entertainment, is made accessible to all. Perhaps this should have been the most significant purpose of the bill.5) The extensive debate and criticism surrounding the Bill underscores the necessity of adhering to the Pre-Legislative Consultation Policy and considering valid suggestions. While the withdrawal may seem like a setback, it serves as a reminder of the importance of procedural safeguards and the need for a more thoughtful and inclusive approach to lawmaking particularly in areas that affect democratic expression of citizens.

Conundrum of native IP vs 3rd party sales for BBCBBC is continuing with its digital first efforts, and Tim Davie will lay out today his vision for the future, as well as touch on potential licence fee updates, as 2027 is when the Royal Charter expires, it'll be interesting to see what he has to say on that front for the long term future of the BBC.However, in his comments he highlights one of the great conundrums that local broadcasters or studios face. The fight of building, or maintaining a brand through content deals, which in the short term don't generate money vs 3rd party sales, which bring in short-term cash. "Outside of the UK, the long-running sci-fi show will be exclusive to Disney+, with new episodes dropping on the BBC iPlayer in the UK and Disney+, internationally, at the same time. Despite the importance of international tie-ups. Davey will also warn that “British storytelling is at growing risk of being squeezed out in an extraordinarily competitive global media landscape”, with a “danger of allowing the UK’s world-class creative industries to be undermined”."Davie is having it both ways, and maybe local broadcasters need to do that, stay competitive in their home markets, but licence abroad. While BBC produces and creates Doctor Who, in the minds of international audiences who are not yet familiar with the iconic brand, this will be associated with Disney, and maybe be seen as Disney production, eroding the BBC's brand recognition. However, needs must when you have a broadcaster that has lost 20% of its income in real terms over the last 10 years, cash on hand is vital to continue the show on the road. This is focused on BBC, but it could even be about broadcasters like RTVE, France Televisions, ZDF and other big content creators, even private ones like Movistar+ who have to balance the success of their platforms vs immediate revenue from global streamers. How to best monetise content, while protecting their brand name. Perhaps if they were to get the global SVODs to watermark their content, it would be a great value for the IP in the minds of audiences, who are consuming BBC content on Netflix, Disney or Amazon, but won't relate it to BBC.When it comes to the public broadcasters, something will have to change in the funding models to allow them to better compete on a national and international stage. Otherwise, their international standing, and even at home will be eroded, as Davie warns. Or they can try and force a watermarking agreement with SVODs, to get their attribution out of the credits at the end of the show, and onto the screen and make connections with the viewer. Otherwise, they'll just be a studio for the global SVODs, a source quick cash, and long term IP will decline. #broadcasters #vod #ottplatforms #streamingplatforms #nativeip #teleivison #tvindustry #svod https://lnkd.in/dghZY9Zm

https://lnkd.in/ecNJXGXr Broadcasters and news providers are pushing for laws allowing them to negotiate with dominant digital platforms like Facebook and Google for fair terms and conditions when their content is picked up. In Canada, a law that requires online companies to negotiate licensing agreements to pay news publishers was passed last year. That led Meta to pull the plug on news. Facebook and Instagram users in Canada are no longer able to view or share news content, including news articles and audio-visual content posted by radio stations. But a surprise silver lining may offer hope for U.S. broadcasters and news providers.Just released data from Media Technology Monitor finds the most popular source among Canadians for online news is now Canadian broadcasters. Following Meta taking news down last year, MTM says nearly three in ten (29%) online Canadians say they are using the websites or apps of Canadian news organizations more. “While Canadians are mentioning traditional outlets like TV and radio as being used more for news content, 18 to 34 year olds are looking more to YouTube and other social networking platforms to get their content,” it says in a new report. There is also a high rate of awareness of what is happening. MTM says three-quarters (78%) of online Canadians are aware that Meta is blocking news on Facebook and Instagram, although people who use those sites are less aware of what is occurring – a natural outgrowth of both no longer featuring news. Critics of the social media giant can also point to MTM data showing that more than one third (35%) of online Canadians feel that they will consume less Canadian news as a result of the Meta ban, with women and 18 to 34 years olds most likely to feel that way.Broadcasters on both sides of the border haveslammed Meta for holding news “hostage.”The National Association of Broadcasters and Canadian Association of Broadcasters support legislation they say enables news providers to negotiate with tech giants. “These retaliatory tactics demonstrate Meta’s monopolistic dominance over the advertising marketplace and its ability to dictate how radio and TV broadcasters, newspapers and others can reach audiences online,” the trade groups said in a joint statement last year. But Meta has argued that it is news outlets that have benefited from the distribution channel, and that by making news available on its platforms it has generatedabout $175 million per year worth of free marketingfor news outlets. “We know the people using our platforms don’t come to us for news,” it saidin a blog postafter it pulled news down in Canada.U.S. Fight Brews....
