A long-standing rivalry between Kamaru Usman and Belal Muhammad has captured the attention of UFC fans, but a fight between the two seems unlikely to materialize anytime soon. Despite their ongoing feud, Usman has made it clear that he has no interest in facing Muhammad in the octagon.
During a recent fan Q&A in Abu Dhabi, Usman explained the reasons behind the lack of a bout. He stated, "I just think he's a dork, and the best approach is to ignore them." Usman further emphasized the disparity in their rankings, with Muhammad currently ranked higher in the division. He added, "I have nothing to gain from fighting Belal Muhammad. He's the one calling me out because he has everything to gain."
The tension between the two fighters reached a boiling point in September 2024 when Muhammad was scheduled to appear on Usman's podcast. However, an altercation during the recording led to the episode being shelved. Both sides have accused the other of physical aggression, with Muhammad claiming that Usman was in tears during the incident.
Regardless of the controversy, Usman went on to defeat Joaquin Buckley at UFC Atlanta, while Muhammad is set to face Ian Machado Garry at UFC Qatar. Usman's next opponent remains uncertain, but he is aiming to compete at the upcoming UFC White House event in June, potentially with a chance to reclaim the welterweight championship.
"I think the odds are good," Usman said, "especially if the winner of the Islam Makhachev and Jack Della Maddalena fight decides to take some time off. If it's Islam, Ramadan is approaching, so we'll likely sit out for a couple of months. The White House event could be the perfect time for me to get back in there and fight for the title."
So, will we ever see Usman and Muhammad face off in the octagon? Only time will tell, but for now, it seems like Usman is content to let the rivalry simmer while he focuses on his own path to the championship.
