LinkedIn Skill Assessments

Last updated: 9 months ago

Important to know

Linkedin Skill Assessments are no longer available. We’ve heard from hirers that examples of how a candidate applied their skills is increasingly valuable to assess fit. So we’ve made it possible for members to tag a skill to any credentials obtained and connect their skills to specific jobs, projects or education directly on their Profile. We encourage members to focus on representing their skills on profile in order to stand out to hirers in a way they trust. Learn more about ways to showcase skills here.

The LinkedIn Skill Assessments feature allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of the skills you've added on your profile by completing assessments specific to those skills.

A typical assessment consists of 15 multiple choice questions; each question tests at least one concept or subskill. The questions are timed and must be completed in one session.

Creation of Skill Assessments

LinkedIn Skill Assessments are produced by subject matter experts and leaders in the LinkedIn Learning community, who have extensive experience in generating exam and certification content.

To improve the quality and relevance of assessments:

  • Multiple writers, instructors, and authors write the questions.

  • Peer reviewers regularly provide feedback to improve the content.

  • Each question is timed, which makes it difficult to look up answers while taking the skill assessment.

  • A computer-based methodology called adaptive testing is used to recognize your skill level and then adjust the questions you're asked accordingly.

Scoring the Skill Assessments

Once you’ve completed an assessment, your answers will be scored, and an assessment report will be generated. You can view it at any time from the Skills page, under the Results tab. You can always delete your score and report.

If you score in the top 30% (determined by comparing your score against a curated benchmark), you'll receive a skill badge, which you can opt to display on your profile and in recruiter searches. A skill badge:

  • Represents that you’ve taken a Skill Assessment and demonstrated that you are highly skilled in that area.

  • Signals to other members and recruiters that you've taken the initiative to show your skill proficiency. This can help you form beneficial relationships and help us surface more relevant content or opportunities for you on LinkedIn.

  • Won’t change as more people take the assessment.

Important to know

You won't be able to retrieve your report or recover your badge once you delete them. You also won't be able to retake the same assessment for six months, and LinkedIn won't be able to recommend LinkedIn Learning courses or job opportunities for you.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • You may receive a link to the assessment because the recruiter for the job you’ve applied to has listed a skill as a Desired Skill.

  • It’s not mandatory for you to take the assessment. However, taking the assessment will help you stand out by showcasing that you have the desired skills of an ideal candidate, as well as increase your chances of getting noticed by other recruiters.

  • Recruiters won’t be able to see your score. If you pass the assessment, recruiters will see the badge on your profile, if you choose to display it.

  • You can take an assessment on your mobile device but, we highly recommend that you take them using your laptop or desktop computer.

  • If you don't earn a skill badge for a given skill, you can retake the exam once more within six months.
