A good way to estimate the size of the Bitcoin market is to compare BTC with other major asset categories such as gold, U.S. stocks and the U.S. dollar. We can do this by adding together the estimated market capitalizations of these asset classes and calculating the "market share" of each. Currently, Bitcoin has a 1.49% share when compared to gold, the U.S. stock market and the U.S. dollar.

Bitcoin dominance has seen significant changes over the years. In the early days of cryptocurrency, the BTC dominance was extremely high, as the cryptocurrency space was small and consisted of Bitcoin and a handful of smaller projects.
Over the years, a lot more resources and capital have been poured into the cryptocurrency and blockchain sector. This has resulted in projects like Ethereum delivering technological innovations and achieving substantial valuations. The year 2017 was especially important, as the rise of “altcoins” resulted in BTC dominance taking a big fall.
