Cities account for 3% of the world’s land, but account for ¾ of energy consumption and ~75% of carbon emissions. There is an increasing need to build more sustainable cities and communities.
The Local Pathways Fellowship is a 10-month training program that provides young urban innovators with the tools to design and implement programs that champion local pathways to sustainable development.
Fellows graduate the program with the skills and knowledge to work together with local authorities in planning, building and maintaining cities that are sustainable, inclusive and resilient.

Cities are critical to shaping a sustainable future
By 2050 almost 70% of global population will live in urban areas. This means that the success of the Sustainable Development Goals will depend on our ability to transform the cities we live in.
We're looking for stubborn urban optimists
SDG 11 is your heart and soul. You're committed to the cause and ready to start. We'll guide you through this 10-month journey, but you'll take ownership of your impact.
The journey doesn't end at the Fellowship
Our goal is not only to help you launch an urban solution for your city, but to accelerate your journey in the urban development space. Fellows benefit from global visibility and exposure as champions for sustainable development.
How to join
The Local Pathways Fellowship seeks to provide young leaders with a platform, a guiding framework for action, and connect them with leading development experts and practitioners:
- Guide and inform their work around their existing and future projects, and help them develop insights about local sustainable development challenges;
- Provide them with a framework for engagement with local stakeholders;
- Facilitate mutual learning and exchange of urban solutions;
- Support them in becoming local advocates that promote and advocate for dialogue and problem solving for sustainable development.
The fellows will take on a 10-month journey throughout which they will explore pathways for "localizing" the globally adopted goals and targets, exchange knowledge and ideas, and work to engage local stakeholders in a dialogue around pathways towards a better future for their fellow citizens.
The Local Pathways Fellowship is unpaid. The fellows will benefit from global visibility and exposure as champions for sustainable urban development, numerous opportunities to develop their expertise, as well as access to a vast network of SDG professionals and advocates.
