Who Sets the MCCs? The card networks (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover) set the MCC codes to ensure that merchants are classified correctly. Each code corresponds with a specific type of merchant activity.

For example, standard Walmart locations are typically listed as MCC 5310 — or discount stores — while Walmart Supercenters are usually listed under Visa's MCC 5411 — grocery stores and supermarkets.

A single merchant may have multiple MCCs assigned that vary depending on the different products, services, or departments the company sells. Likewise, some companies may have their own dedicated MCC, like airlines, rental cars, and hotels. MCCs are fairly standard across the Visa and MasterCard card networks.

These codes are issued by two groups, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC), and credit card networks then decide which codes to use and apply to merchants within their networks.
