Prepare to be mesmerized by the ultimate fusion of style and speed! The McLaren 688 HS, a prototype that's as scary as it is stylish, has made its way to Milan's MonteNapoleone District for a Halloween weekend showcase. This limited-edition beauty, developed by McLaren Special Operations, is a true masterpiece with only 25 units produced, each allocated to a select few before its public debut.
The 688 HS is an evolution of the 675 LT, blending road legality with track-oriented performance. Its extensive use of carbonfibre in the body and monocoque construction results in a lightweight yet powerful machine, weighing just 1280kg and packing an impressive 688PS (678bhp) from its 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine. This powerhouse is connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the ProActive Chassis Control system ensures sharp handling and an improved response at the limit.
But here's where it gets controversial... The 688 HS's aerodynamic design is a masterpiece in itself. Its rear wing serves a dual purpose as both a high-downforce element and an airbrake, a feature that becomes especially useful when considering its mind-boggling acceleration. This beast can sprint from 0-62mph in a mere 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 204mph! The lightweight ten-spoke alloy wheels, wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo R tyres, complete the package.
Each of the 25 production cars was individually specified by MSO with unique colours and finishes. The interior, with its track-oriented theme, features Alcantara and bare carbonfibre, adding to the overall racing aesthetic. The prototype on display at the Larusmiani Automotive Gallery is the only one of its kind, finished in a stunning Fire Black paint with metallic orange and gold sparkling accents. A central exposed carbonfibre stripe adds an extra touch of elegance to this already breathtaking machine. The orange theme also pays homage to McLaren's F1 constructors' title win, a nod to the brand's rich racing heritage.
This installation is part of Larusmiani's Automotive Gallery programme, an exploration of the links between craftsmanship and automotive design. Founded in 1922, Larusmiani is renowned for its bespoke tailoring and uses its gallery space to showcase vehicles and objects that celebrate design and engineering excellence. The CEO, Guglielmo Miani, is also the president of the MonteNapoleone District and the mastermind behind the FuoriConcorso events. We'll be catching up with Guglielmo later this year to discuss his vision for 2026.
