When you purchased your first Apple device - be it a Mac, iPod, iPhone, or iPad - you will be asked to register some details and an email address when you first start up OS X. The email address can be your current email address (e.g., yourname@emailprovider.com), or you can set up a new one from Apple (e.g., yourname@mac.com or yourname@icloud.com).
