TCG Rulings
- Monster Tokens are monsters that appear on the field as the result of a card’s effect. They are not included in the Deck, and cannot be sent anywhere other than the field, such as the hand or Graveyard. When a Token is destroyed or returned to the hand or deck, they are simply removed from the field instead. You can use official Token cards or use coins, card sleeves, or any similar marker (as long as it can indicate Attack Position or Defense Position) as Monster Tokens and play them in Monster Card Zones. Each Monster Token takes up 1 of your 5 Monster Card Zones. Their battle position is always either face-up Attack Position or face-up Defense Position[1]. Tokens cannot be used as an Xyz Material.[2]
Judge Program Forum Rulings[]
These Ruling(s) have not been confirmed as applicable to the TCG.[Notes 1] |
- Book of Eclipse: You cannot activate "Book of Eclipse" if the only monsters on the field are Defense Position Tokens. If there are other monsters on the field and "Book of Eclipse" is legally activated, "Book of Eclipse" will switch Attack Position tokens into Defense Position but will not flip them face-down as Tokens cannot be flipped face-down.[3]
- Book of Moon: You cannot activate "Book of Moon" and target a Token.[4]
OCG Rulings[]
- Attack of the Cornered Rat: Monster Tokens are treated as Normal Monsters, so you can activate "Attack of the Cornered Rat" when a Level 3 or lower Monster Token battles.[5]
- Book of Eclipse: You cannot activate "Book of Eclipse" if the only monsters on the field are Monster Tokens. Also, if "Book of Eclipse" is activated while a "Slate Warrior" and a Monster Token in Attack Position are on the field, "Slate Warrior" is changed to face-down Defense Position, but the Monster Token remains in face-up Attack Position.[6]
- Book of Moon: Monster Tokens cannot be changed to face-down Defense Position. Therefore, they cannot be targeted with "Book of Moon".[7]
- Chimeratech Fortress Dragon: Monster Tokens cannot be sent to the Graveyard, since they disappear when they leave the field. Thus, they cannot be sent to the Graveyard as a Fusion Material to Special Summon "Chimeratech Fortress Dragon".[8]
- Dark End Dragon: You can target a Monster Token with the effect of "Dark End Dragon". In that case, when the effect resolves, the Monster Token disappears instead of being sent to the Graveyard.[9]
- Elemental HERO Neos Knight: The ATK of "Elemental HERO Neos Knight" is increased by half of the original ATK of the Fusion Material.[10]
- If you use a "Double Dude Token" (1000 ATK) from "Destiny HERO - Double Dude" as a Fusion Material for "Elemental HERO Neos Knight", then the ATK of "Elemental HERO Neos Knight" is increased by 500.[10]
- Gandora the Dragon of Destruction: If a Monster Token is destroyed and banished by the effect of "Gandora the Dragon of Destruction", then the Monster Token was still destroyed by the effect, so it is counted for the ATK increase.[11]
- Heat Wave: Tokens Monsters Special Summoned by an effect like "Scapegoat" are treated as Normal Monsters. Therefore, "Scapegoat" can be activated during the turn in which "Heat Wave" was activated.[12]
- Kasha: The ATK of "Kasha" is determined by the number of returned monsters which are Zombie-Type while they are in the Deck. If "Zoma the Spirit" is returned to the Deck, it is not a Zombie-Type monster while in the Deck, so it is not counted. Monster Tokens are not returned to the Deck, so they will not be counted.[13]
- Mecha Phantom Beast Concoruda: While the effect of "Mecha Phantom Beast Concoruda" is being applied, Monster Tokens treated as Equip Cards by the effect of "Relinquished" cannot be destroyed by card effects.[14]
- Ojama Knight: An Ojama Token on the field can be used as a Fusion Material for "Ojama Knight".[15]
- Stygian Street Patrol: If "Stygian Street Patrol" destroys a Monster Token like a "Sheep Token" or an "Embodiment of Apophis" by battle, then you do not inflict damage to your opponent equal to the Level of the destroyed monster x 100.[16]
- Swords of Concealing Light: You can activate "Swords of Concealing Light" even if the opponent controls Monster Tokens. In that case, when the effect resolves, the Monster Tokens do not change their battle positions. (For example, if a Monster Token was in Attack Position, it remains in Attack Position.) However, "Monsters your opponent controls cannot change their battle positions. Destroy this card during your 2nd Standby Phase after activation." is applied normally.[17]
- Unibird: You can banish Monster Tokens or an "Embodiment of Apophis" as an activation cost for the effect of "Unibird". In that case, you will still Special Summon a Synchro Monster whose Level is equal to or lower than the combined Levels of "Unibird" and the banished monster.[18]
Previously Official Rulings[]
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been deemed unofficial by Konami.[20] They were previously considered official and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules, or unless Konami has issued a ruling that says otherwise. Judge List Rulings
- Cloak and Dagger: You cannot declare "Sheep Token", "Slime Token", etc. because you must declare existing Monster Card names, like "Blue-Eyes White Dragon", "Kuriboh", etc.[19]
