What is nectar in answer? ›

Nectar is a viscous, sugar-rich liquid produced by plants in glands called nectaries, either within the flowers with which it attracts pollinating animals, or by extrafloral nectaries, which provide a nutrient source to animal mutualists, which in turn provide herbivore protection.

Nectaries are usually located at the base of the flower stamens, which draw animal visitors into contact with the pollen to be transferred. Most flowers secrete only relatively small amounts of nectar, which encourages cross-pollination, since animals must visit several flowers in order to receive a full meal.

Under ultraviolet, the flowers have a darker center, where the nectaries are located, and often specific patterns upon the petals as well.

Nectar volumes can range from less than a microlitre in many bee flowers to several millilitres in flowers pollinated by birds or bats, and sugar concentrations in nectar range from about 10–70% w/w.

Nectar is a beverage with less than 100% fruit or vegetable juice containment, where the minimum fruit content is 25%. Explained in plain terms, in nectars, fruit juice is diluted with water.
