Odalia Blight (2024)

What he does with our products is none of our business. What is my business is keeping our family ahead of the rest.

—Odalia Blight to her husband, "Clouds on the Horizon"

Odalia Blight is an antagonistic character in The Owl House. She is the former CEO of Blight Industries, the wife of Alador, and the mother of Edric, Emira, and Amity.

A scheming, greedy, mean and tyrannical woman, Odalia held a controlling grasp on the interests of her employees and every other member of the Blight family, playing a role that emboldened them with high expectations to vicariously satisfy Odalia's ambitions.

In order to obtain more influence, she colluded with Emperor Belos, supplying him an army through her company in a flawed attempt to ensure her family's survival during the Day of Unity. This revelation ultimately causes her family to sever all ties with Odalia,[1] leaving her to depart with them on bitter terms. After the Day of Unity, she aligns with the Collector in an attempt to manipulate him, only to be reduced to a mere servant.

What happened with Odalia blight?Odalia Blight (3)

In "Clouds on the Horizon", Odalia's relationship with her family came to a head when Amity and her friends attempted to sabotage her business in order to stop Belos, only for Odalia to reveal she was working with Belos all along. This revelation ultimately caused her family to sever all ties with Odalia, leaving her to depart with them on bitter terms. After Belos' defeat and the Collector's redemption, Odalia was last seen scowling angrily at Amity and Alador and vanished from the show. It is unknown what happened to her after that, but it is implied by the creators that Alador finally divorced Odalia.

What is the meaning behind Amity's last name, Blight?Odalia Blight (4)

Amity Blight's last name has its roots in Latin, meaning "disease in plants caused by fungi". This could relate to the formerly troubled relationship between Amity and Willow before now, as her first name "Amity" means "friendship" in Latin, which shows her desire for friendship.

Appearance

Body

Odalia is a witch with a curvaceous build contrasted by the sharp features in her face. She has skin and tufted hair similar to Amity's, but the latter is a two-toned mint green, lighter on the top layer and darker on the bottom layer, a trait she shares with her eldest children, Edric and Emira, with a lighter streak across the top. Unlike the rest of her family, Odalia has blue eyes.

As a teenager, she strongly resembled Amity, but with natural mint green hair in the same hairstyle as in her adulthood, along with thicker arms and legs.

Clothing

Odalia wears a violet blouse with a white waistcoat that has a triple interlocking orb pattern, navy pants, and gray heeled boots. While serving the Collector, her blouse is lighter in color with gold rings and frills halfway along the sleeves, while the other halves of the sleeves become pink. Her waistcoat is now light purple and has purple and light pink star patterns on it. Her pants are now two-toned with a diamond on both knee areas, and her boots are now indigo with pink bands around the ankles and yellow star patterns on the toes.

She accessorizes her appearance with a necklace containing a pink, oval gem, purple lipstick, and golden earrings. While serving the Collector, she wears earrings shaped like a crescent moon and four-pointed star, on the left and right ears respectively.

In Odalia's youth, she wore a dress in a low-tied bun.

During her days as a student at Hexside, she wore the school's uniform with purple sleeves and leggings as a member of the oracle track, and two-tone black boots.

Personality

As a businesswoman, Odalia is a controlling woman whose haughty and elitist thinking makes her a domineering influence on anyone around her, including her family. She is shown to be highly concerned about her family's reputation to the point where she'll interfere with her children's personal lives and opinions to ensure they stay in line, even silencing her own children when they wish to speak their mind on the matter. This is evident by how she uses her oracle magic to telepathically keep Amity in line via matching amulets that allow Odalia to directly speak to Amity in her mind. Additionally, it was Odalia who forced Amity to end her friendship with Willow due to her weak magical abilities and lower social status, making her be "friends" with Boscha and Skara instead since they came from more respectable families.

Odalia claims to be an honorable woman, always reciting her family's motto, but in actuality, has proven to have every intention of going back on her word on numerous occasions, showing nothing but hypocrisy on her part. When something doesn't end up going as she planned, she has to be told how it can potentially benefit her. Not only underhanded, Odalia has a duplicitous side in how she offered to let Luz, Willow, and Gus back into Hexside if Luz assisted her and her husband with a demonstration of their company products, but it was revealed to have actually been a plot to eliminate Luz completely. She is also quite greedy, which is evident when Amity ruined a Blight Industries demonstration and lost many investors willing to buy their products, causing her to become furious with her younger daughter. All of these actions ultimately paint Odalia as short-sighted, as her plan to get rid of Luz ended up being the reason Amity finally stood up to her for her constant lording over her youngest daughter.

During the Day of Unity, when it is revealed that Odalia knows about the true nature of the event, she is shown to not care about it, fully believing that she and her family will enjoy great prosperity in the "new world" once Belos' plan comes to fruition. When Alador and her children try to reason with her, she willingly brushes them off and goes to great lengths to ensure its success, explaining that they are not going to hinder her without a single care for their feelings or opinions. This shows that Odalia cares about keeping her family ahead of everyone else, regardless of how her family feels and whether or not they actually agree with her.

Odalia's abusive and apathetic behavior towards her family ultimately leads them to turn their backs on her after realizing she's been helping Emperor Belos to commit genocide against witchkind. Despite losing everything she had worked for, she refused to show remorse over her actions and poor treatment of her family and parts ways with them, even when she wasn't happy that she was reduced into a servant to the Collector or seeing Amity reunited with Alador.

Background

Early life

Odalia Blight (5)

Odalia was once a student of Hexside School of Magic and Demonics, where she was enrolled in the oracle track. She attended the school at the same time as Eda, Lilith, and Raine. Odalia was friends with Alador, in addition to future Abomination Coven leader Darius, and attended the Emperor's Coven tryout between Eda and Lilith.[2]

Forming a family

Odalia Blight (6)

At some point, Odalia married Alador and became the mother of three children: Emira, Edric, and Amity. Due to the high status of the Blight family, both Odalia and Alador disapproved of Amity's friendship with Willow Park and forced their youngest daughter to disassociate from Willow.[3] At some point, Odalia started having Amity dye her hair green so that she and her siblings could have matching colors.[4][5]

Blight Industries Expo

Odalia Blight (7)

As Odalia and Alador are hosting a demonstration of their new Abomaton, she has Amity pretend to lose a fight to "make up for poor behavior". However, Amity destroys the Abomaton when it is about to step on a picture of her and her friends. After Odalia realizes Amity has friends outside of their social standing - Luz, Willow, and Gus - she looks into their history and has them expelled from Hexside, being present when the news is broken and has her daughter witness the event to further control her. In addition, she gives Amity double the number of classes to punish her. When she and Alador leave, Odalia gives Luz her business card in the pretense of a negotiation.

Odalia Blight (8)

After Luz comes to Blight Manor to convince Odalia to let her, Willow, and Gus back into Hexside, Odalia claims she will allow it if Luz helps with the expo. Luz agrees, but at the expo, she almost ends up getting killed by the Abomaton 2.0, which "won't stop until its enemies are destroyed", according to Odalia. She watches in amusem*nt until Amity steps in and stands up to her, forcing Odalia to agree to let her friends back into Hexside by threatening to dismantle the Abomaton in front of the investors. She agrees, and the girls pretend to lose. Odalia prepares to break her deal with Amity until her husband tells her to keep her word, pointing that Amity's friends are making her stronger, possibly strong enough to become a Coven Head.

Odalia Blight (9)

After the expo, she speaks with Alador on the success of the expo as the Golden Guard arrives and demands that they only sell their Abomatons to the Emperor's Coven in exchange for Belos funding the line to improve on it. Odalia thanks the Golden Guard as he says the Emperor does not want civilians in possession of a private army.[6]

Sometime after the expo, Amity decides to change her hair color to purple, an act Odalia hated. She attempts to convince her youngest daughter to dye her hair back to green, though this does not deter Amity in any way.[7]

Getting ready for the Day of Unity

Odalia Blight (10)

As the Day of Unity approaches, Odalia somehow became aware of the event's true nature and the Draining Spell taking place but believes her family will be spared and treated as royalty afterwards, something Belos would never do. When her husband becomes sick with fire flu, she lays off half his team and expects the same effort with half the numbers. Alador would also question why the Emperor needed so many Abomatons for the Day of Unity, but Odalia would silence him with a threat of having their children more involved with their work and divorce. When she learns that her children are against the Day of Unity, she locks them in Amity's room, grounds Amity, and breaks her communication device to prevent contact with Luz. However, with the help of Willow, Gus, and Hunter, Luz rescues Amity.

Odalia Blight (11)

When Kikimora arrives to pick up the last Abomatons, Odalia presents her with a new model, the Abomatron. After finding Amity and her friends in the factory, she traps them in a barrier and has the twins grounded again. Odalia becomes displeased with Amity's rebellious behavior when she tries to break the barrier out of rage; upon Amity's revelation that Luz is her girlfriend, her mother refuses to accept this and states she will find her a better one than Luz. Suddenly, Alador disables the force field and begins to tell Odalia about the severity of the Draining Spell, but she reveals that she already knew about it, wanting to support the Day of Unity so her family could prosper.

Odalia Blight (12)

A fight breaks out between her and Alador, and while Odalia has the upper hand, Alador soon gains control and shuts down the remaining Abomatons. Amity then vows to never speak with Odalia again, with Alador also quitting his post at Blight Industries. Odalia is left bitter and with none of her family on her side, she then disappears altogether.[8] After Alador leaves with Amity and her friends, she reports the ship they are using as stolen. It is highly likely Odalia was affected by the Draining Spell like everyone else, and was saved when the Collector stopped it.[9]

Serving the Collector

Odalia Blight (13)

Soon after the Day of Unity, Odalia finds the Collector and joins him in an attempt to recreate the Boiling Isles in her image. However, since the Collector has no interest in this, she is treated as a servant and forced to perform menial tasks, such as putting away the transformed citizens of the Boiling Isles and serving food to Eda, who the Collector believes was still in her Owl Beast form. Months after the Day of Unity, she is lugging dolls to the archives when King passes by her and asks for a transformed Hooty, and gives him to King.

Odalia Blight (14)

Later, she passes the Coven heads and decides to use the transformed Raine Whispers to do the work for her. As she is doing so, she openly voices how making a deal with the Collector was a waste of time and wishes someone would see her potential. At that moment, Emperor Belos arrives and uses Raine's body as a host as Odalia watches in shock.

Odalia Blight (15)

After Belos is defeated, Odalia scowls as she watches her husband and youngest daughter reunite, seemingly unhappy with the way things occurred, despite her complaints.

Relationships

Alador Blight

Odalia Blight (16)

Alador is Odalia's husband, and they have been together since they were both studying at Hexside. Odalia seems to care about her husband, as she is seen giving him words of encouragement while he is busy trying to create the perfect Abomaton, and also praising him for his work after the product event. Odalia also obeys her husband, as seen when Alador reminds her that she has to uphold her promise to Amity because a Blight always upholds their end of the deal; she obliges, saying they have to do what is best for the family. Despite all this, Odalia is also annoyed at her husband's tendency of getting distracted easily, such as facepalming when she realizes that Alador is off chasing a butterfly and not listening to her.

In "Clouds on the Horizon", one day before the Day of Unity, Alador and Odalia argue over their conflicting views, and it soon becomes clear that Odalia only views her husband as a business partner and someone to do the hard work for her, not someone she loves. When Alador questions the amount of security needed for the Day of Unity, Odalia threatens him by saying that if he doesn't do what she says, she will get her kids involved in Blight Industries, keeping Alador in check with what she wants.

Later in the episode, Alador reveals to King that his wife has made him work nonstop for five years and expects him to get as much work done as he can on his own. King tells Alador of Belos' true intentions for the Day of Unity, and becomes terrified, Alador goes to speak with Odalia. He tries to reason with her by informing her the Emperor's true plans, but when she reveals that she's already aware, Alador is disgusted with her, causing her to remark that this is why she never tells him about things. She adds that it's what's best for the family because the Emperor promised Odalia that in the new world, her family would be royalty, something the others knew Belos would not keep. When Amity, Luz, and her friends are held as prisoners, Alador defies his wife, letting the children escape while he fights Odalia and defends them. After the Blight Industries warehouse is destroyed, Alador quits Blight Industries, which doesn't change Odalia, and she lets him go, but not before telling him he won't be receiving his severance package.

Amity Blight

Odalia Blight (17)

The relationship between the Odalia and Amity was proven to be unhealthy, as "Understanding Willow" made it clear that Odalia mostly saw Amity as a means to preserve their family's reputation above all else, and even damaged Amity's friendship with Willow in the past for that purpose. Amity's diary entry where she unintentionally addressed one of her teachers as her mother in "Lost in Language", hinted that their relationship is still as awful as ever, and that Amity wished Odalia truly loved her. This is more covered in "Escaping Expulsion", when Amity is warned by Odalia not to mess up the demonstration for Blight Industries investors, but when she does, Odalia vehemently scolds her. It is also revealed that, for years, Odalia used an oracle necklace to scold Amity in her mind and control her without anyone realizing.

Upon seeing the Grom photo, Odalia realizes that Amity's more rebellious behavior is caused by her new friends. This makes her proceed to force Principal Bump to expel Luz, Willow, and Gus from Hexside, deeming the trio as a distraction to Amity, much to her dismay. In order to make sure Amity stays under control, Odalia gives her double the classes as punishment. When Amity rebels against her and stops the Abomaton from harming Luz at the second Blight Industries demonstration, Odalia is about to punish her again, but Amity breaks her necklace, severing her mother's telepathic connection with her. Following this event, Alador stops her from harming her daughter.

In "Reaching Out", Amity reveals to Alador that Odalia is trying to dye her hair green again, showing that Odalia is still making an attempt to control her.

Odalia Blight (18)

In "Clouds on the Horizon", Odalia grounds Amity for spying on her and Alador. When Amity, Luz, and their friends break into the Blight Industries warehouse, Odalia sees past the ruse and captures them. She pins the blame on Amity for causing the drama and the twins to rebel, viewing her as no more than a misfit and belittling Luz. This causes Amity to furiously snap, revealing that Luz is her girlfriend, which displeases Odalia and causes her to remark that she'll find her a better girlfriend who isn't a criminal. After Odalia reveals that she knows about the Draining Spell, in addition to displaying utter apathy towards the imminent genocide of witches, instead favoring Belos' false promised world and wiles of royalty, Amity resolves to never speak to her mother again and effectively disowns her.

In "King's Tide", when Amity learns that the ship she stole with Alador, Gus, Willow, and Hunter was reported stolen, she gets upset with Odalia, knowing that it was likely her who reported it.

While stranded in the Human Realm in "Thanks to Them", Amity places a drawing of the Blight family in the interior of the Old House, but Odalia is conspicuously absent, demonstrating that Amity no longer considers her family.

Amity also ignored her presence when she was reunited with her father in "Watching and Dreaming".

Edric and Emira Blight

Odalia Blight (19)

While little direct interaction has been shown between Odalia and the twins, it is clear that she possesses a poor relationship with her eldest daughter and son. In "Lost in Language", Amity stated that Odalia has a clear bias toward Emira and Edric, hinting that she doesn't view Amity with such high regard as she does with the twins, and that she is less controlling towards them than she is with her. Despite this, her actual care for the twins has been called into question multiple times. In "Reaching Out", it has been implied by Edric that Odalia, in truth, thinks little of him and doesn't take him seriously, implying that they share a somewhat distant relationship. In addition, she is also unafraid of using the twins as bargaining chips in her pursuit of profit. This was demonstrated when it was revealed that she had ensured their father's compliance in her business ventures with Belos, by threatening to force them into a "more active role" in the family's company if he didn't abide by her instructions.

For their part, the twins are not truly loyal to Odalia either, as they have gone against her from time to time, when they disagree with their mother's actions, though in secret in order to prevent getting in trouble with her. This was shown when they helped Amity, Gus, and Willow infiltrate the Blight Industries Expo to rescue Luz when Odalia attempted to have her killed, and later when they helped Amity dye her hair purple, despite knowing Odalia would be furious about this. In addition, the twins also seem to be much more aware of their mother's true selfish and greedy nature than their younger sister. Unlike Amity, who initially hoped to reason with their mother following the truth about the Day of Unity being revealed, Edric and Emira plainly knew that Odalia was beyond reasoning, recognizing that she would always place her own self interest above those of her family.

In "Clouds on the Horizon", Odalia's relationship with the twins thoroughly deteriorated, with them siding with Amity and Luz against her in order to stop her attempts in aiding Belos' attempted genocide of the Isles, first by attempting to burn down her factory and later by sabotaging Kikimora's airship, though she managed to thwart and capture them in both attempts. During this time, it was shown how little Odalia truly cared about the twins' well-being, as she was willing to physically harm and restrain them to prevent them from interfering with her plans.

In "For the Future", Odalia's lack of care for her twin children was insinuated and entertained during her servitude to the Collector. During the time she was with the Collector, Odalia expressed no worry nor consideration to the status or well-being of her eldest children following the Collector's chaotic takeover of the Isles, instead focusing only on attempting to manipulate the Collector and her own frustrations in failing to do so. However, as being in the Collector's favor was presented for her survival and the other Blights nowhere to be seen, it is unclear as to what extent Odalia's deal had was the Collector and whether this involved the remaining Blights.

Following Belos' defeat, the twins are seen embracing Alador and Amity, while Odalia is grimacing in the background. Though in an interview Dana did say that while she and Alador did divorce that the twins and to an extent Amity still visit her from time to time

The Park family

Odalia Blight (20)

It is yet to be revealed whether Odalia and Willow ever interacted, but owing to the difference in their social status and why she forbade Amity from befriending her to begin with, it's clear that she disdained the Park family as a whole for not being an influential family as much as the Blights.

Luz Noceda

Odalia Blight (21)

Although Luz and Odalia barely know each other, it is shown that she dislikes her due to her belief that she supposedly "distracted" her daughter from putting on a good show of their product. She even made Luz pay for her daughter's mistakes by having her, Gus, and Willow expelled from Hexside so that she could put Amity back in her place. When she was confronted by Luz and made the point that she would still be friends Amity and thereby still be a distraction to her, she planned to have her eliminated by tricking her into taking Amity's place in the company's show under the guise that she would let her, Gus, and Willow back into Hexside if she makes her show a success. This is evident that when the Abomaton 2.0 was already showing itself to be a successful product; she did not do anything to stop it, because it is supposed to have its enemies completely eliminated for it to stop and it would have worked if her daughter had not arrived in time to stop it.

Odalia Blight (22)

In "Clouds on the Horizon", Odalia views Luz as a criminal for going against the Emperor. She captures Luz, along with Willow, Hunter, Gus, and Amity. She degrades Luz in front of Amity, calling her a brat. When Amity defends Luz, revealing to Odalia that she is Luz's girlfriend, Odalia refuses to accept this, and states that she would get Amity a new girlfriend who isn't on wanted posters, which enrages her.

Gus Porter

Just like with Luz and Willow, Odalia does not view Gus with a high regard and deems him, along with the aforementioned two, a distraction to her daughter. This leads her to have Principal Bump expel him, Luz, and Willow from Hexside.

Hunter

When he was the Golden Guard, Odalia used to show a degree of respect toward Hunter. However, she likely views him as an enemy after the events of "Clouds on the Horizon".

Boscha and Skara's parents

In the past, they have worked together in unknown terms of business. It is also unknown about their status in the present.

Kikimora

Odalia Blight (23)

Odalia is in close cahoots with Kikimora, supplying her with Abomatons to deliver to Emperor Belos before the Day of Unity. After she left, she called her a "gremlin", but it is unknown if this is Kikimora's species, or if this was an insult. She also gives her a new mount in the Abomatron, which excites her greatly.

Emperor Belos

Odalia Blight (24)

While the extent of their relationship is not fully known, Odalia is allies with Belos and fully supports his plans for the Day of Unity, along with the Draining Spell. Belos notably purchased the Abomaton line in "Escaping Expulsion" to fund it, and since then, Odalia and Alador have supplied him with numerous Abomatons. When Alador attempts to reveal Belos' true intentions to Odalia a day before the Day of Unity, she reveals that she is willingly going along with the Draining Spell, despite knowing what it would cause, believing he would spare the Blight Family, and make them royalty in his "new world". However, given Belos' true nature as a witch hunter, it's highly likely he only sees Odalia and her products as nothing more than pawns like the rest of his allies.

When Odalia finally meets Belos, who was looking for a new vessel and claims someone was useful, Odalia believes he is referring to her, but the former emperor rejects her and instead possesses Raine, much to her shock.

The Collector

Odalia Blight (25)

At some point after the Day of Unity, Odalia allied with the Collector in hopes of convincing him to use his powers to change the Boiling Isles in her image. However, the Collector rejects her ideas and simply makes her do menial tasks around his home and treats her like a servant rather than anything else. When he asks her to feed Eda pizza bagels in a menacing tone and has her put away the transformed people, Odalia backs off and does as she is told, showing she fears his power. Later, while having the transformed Raine Whispers help her, she openly voices how making a deal with the Collector was nothing more than a waste of time.

Behind the scenes

Name and basis

Odalia is a variant of the Germanic name "Odilia", and is derived either from uodil, which means "heritage", or from ot, which means "wealth".[10][11] This fits her, as the Blight family is very affluent. Odalia's name was first revealed on September 16, 2020, in a charity stream hosted by Dana Terrace.[12]

Voice

Odalia is voiced by Rachael MacFarlane.

Debut

Initially mentioned in "Lost in Language", Odalia made her first on-screen debut as a silhouette during a flashback in the episode "Understanding Willow". She also had a cameo in the flashback from "Young Blood, Old Souls",[13] albeit initially unconfirmed.

She made a full-time appearance in the second season, in the episode "Escaping Expulsion".

Trivia

Odalia Blight (41)
  • The appearance of Odalia's silhouette in the storyboards of "Understanding Willow" differs from the design seen in the finalized episode, with Odalia having long drapping hair, rather than short hair held in a bun.
  • Prior to her full appearance in "Escaping Expulsion", Dana Terrace mentioned in a Reddit AMA that her hair is green, the same as Edric and Emira's.[4]
    • The same comment also stated Odalia had Amity dye her hair green because she likes her children to be "color-coordinated".[4] This was later confirmed in "Through the Looking Glass Ruins".
    • Also, according to Dana's Reddit AMA, Odalia has had a rivalry with Boscha's mother since childhood, and they still try to one up each other through their daughters' accomplishments.[14]
  • Odalia is the only character in the series to address Luz by her full name, besides Luz herself.[6]

Notes

  1. The terms of Odalia's and Alador's relationship was inquired to Terrace during the semi-canonical Post-Hoot Finale stream. Terrace replied with a remark about them getting divorced,[1] but did not corroborate whether this was an official statement or personal headcanon.
