Offers? - are people just trying to avoid a bidding war? (2024)

Hi there,

it's been quite a while since I sold something on Ebay, I listed a number of items yesterday and had Offers turned on because I thought my prices may have been too high.

Instead I've gotten offers on a few things that are higher than my asking price ( one is 4x asking). It is very possible I priced things too low, but my question is, did someone get confused on the UI and put in their max bid instead of an offer, or is this usual / intentional now, people trying to just jump the whole ebay process and get things without having to pay too much?

I don't seem to have a way to contact them without 'responding to the offer' I know if I were new to ebay and had made a mistake, i wouldn't really want someone accepting my offer, when I could be getting it for less, but the volume of these leads me to think I'm the one misunderstanding the situation.

Should I be accepting these offers?

Why do people make offers instead of bidding on eBay? ›

As you theorized, potential buyers often make offers that are higher than the opening bid, because they hope to get the item cheaper that way than if the auction ran its full time with regular bidding. Thus, many of these offers are legitimate. There are also offers from potential scammers.

Is it rude to decline offers on eBay? ›

I know it's a seller's prerogative what to do, but it would be common courtesy to at least decline my offer if they feel we wouldn't be able to come to an agreement. Sitting on my Offer until time expires is downright rude, and it makes me never want to do any kind of business with that seller.

How much should you offer in a bidding war? ›

Buyers employ two main strategies to determine how much is reasonable. In a bidding war, some buyers offer between 1% – 3% over asking to make their offers stand out. Other buyers rely on their real estate agent to gather intel on the other bids on the property, then top the highest bid by a few thousand dollars.
