Thanksgiving is just another day to me if I don’t have my Corn Bread Dressing. Everyone has their own special recipe for dressing. I Like to keep in nice and simple. This recipe has no meat in it, but you can add if you want. Feel free to adjust this recipe to your taste buds! Want to turn this into a Christmas Dressing? I’d add a can of diced and chopped water chestnuts ( drain the liquid from the can!). Enjoy this dressing with your roast turkey, mashed potatoes, and and collard greens.

Hi Elena! I actually have another recipes for ” stuffing” and I used cream of chicken. I like both, but this one is my favorite. The chicken broth and sage are a perfect match for this dressing.

      Good afternoon Brittany,
The difference between dressing and stuffing has little to do with the ingredients. Stuffing is stuffed inside the cavity of the bird( chicken, turkey). Dressing is served on the side. Just remember stuffing for stuffed, dressing on the side 🙂 . I hope this helps. Please let me know how your dinner turns out. I’M EXCITED FOR YOU! XOXOX

Thank you so much I tried your cornbread dressing because it was the closest to how my mother used to make hers the only thing I remember was that she would chopped green bell pepper in her dressing. It brought me to tears, because my mother has been battling dementia for 4 years and all those wonderful recipes she would make for the holiday are lost within her mind.

I got a few from her, but I never got her cornbread dressing. Thank you again for giving me my mother cornbread dressing recipe.

I’m making it again this year for our family Thanksgiving. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving.

FAQs

How moist should dressing be before baking? ›

The stuffing should be moist but not wet. If there is a puddle of broth at the bottom of the bowl, you've added too much. Add more bread to soak up the excess moisture.

What temperature should dressing be cooked at? ›

Cook until the center of the dressing reaches 165 degrees. When checked with a food thermometer. Never place frozen dressing or other frozen food in a slow cooker, it will not reach proper safe temperature fast enough.

What is the difference between cornbread stuffing and cornbread dressing? ›

So stuffing is cooked inside the bird. Dressing is cooked outside the bird, usually in a casserole dish.

Why is my cornbread dressing bland? ›

You're not using enough aromatics

You should include loads of sautéed onions and celery and plenty of herbs (preferably fresh); my favorite herb combo for dressing is fresh parsley, sage, and thyme. Lots of it. More than you might think you need.

Should you put egg in your stuffing? ›

Broth: Chicken broth keeps the stuffing moist without making it soggy. Eggs: Two lightly beaten eggs help hold the dressing together and add moisture.

Why is my cornbread dressing still wet in the middle? ›

If the stuffing came out too wet and soggy (aka bread soup!) try not to over mix it, otherwise it'll turn into mush. Curtis Stone says to pour it on a large sheet tray and spread it out. Bake it on high heat to crisp it up, but make sure it doesn't burn.

Do you cover your dressing when baking? ›

Should dressing be covered when baking? No, leave your dressing uncovered so it has a chance to crisp up on top. The slightly crunchy, golden brown topping is my favorite part of the whole dish! If you were to cover it, the dressing would more so steam than brown and crisp.

Can I cook stuffing at 325 instead of 350? ›

The stuffed meat, poultry, or stuffing in a casserole should be placed immediately after preparation in an oven set no lower than 325 °F. A food thermometer should be used to ensure that the stuffing reaches the safe minimum internal temperature of 165 °F.

Can you prepare uncooked dressing ahead of time and refrigerate? ›

Do not refrigerate uncooked stuffing. If stuffing is prepared ahead of time, it must be either frozen or cooked immediately. To use cooked stuffing later, cool in shallow containers and refrigerate it within 2 hours. Use it within 3 to 4 days.

Why is my cornbread dressing gummy? ›

There could be a few reasons why your cornbread dressing turned gummy. One reason might be that you used too much chicken stock, which made the bread absorb too much moisture and caused it to become soggy. Another possibility is that you didn't bake the cornbread long enough, resulting in a dense final product.

What is the difference between Yankee cornbread and Southern cornbread? ›

Northern cornbreads tend to be more cake-like, on the sweet side, with a finer crumb due to more flour in the mixture. Southern cornbread is flavored with bacon grease, and cooked in a cast iron skillet, a perfect side for barbecues, or chili. It also tends to be rather crumbly.

What do southerners call stuffing? ›

Inside the bird and it's stuffing; outside and it's considered dressing. I personally think it is more of a geographical issue. Go south of the Mason-Dixon Line and in the Midwest and many call it dressing, regardless of if it is prepared in the bird or alongside in a casserole dish.

Is it better to use broth or stock for dressing? ›

You can use either stock or broth for keeping dressing moist or as a basis for gravy, but a strong flavor will give you better results.

How do you cut the salt taste in cornbread dressing? ›

Try some of the following tips to salvage your recipe:
  1. Squeeze some lemon juice or orange juice over your dish. ...
  2. Drizzle in a mild vinegar like all-purpose vinegar, apple cider vinegar, or white wine vinegar to help mask the salt with acidity by distracting the taste buds.
  3. Sprinkle some citric acid in your dish.

Can you leave cornbread out overnight for dressing? ›

Be sure to leave enough time — the cornbread needs to sit out overnight to harden slightly before you make the dressing.

How do you know if your stuffing is moist enough? ›

We recommend adding stock a little at a time--1/2 cup to 1 cup, depending on how much stuffing you're making--and waiting for the bread to absorb the liquid before adding more. Once the bread is moist but not sitting in a pool of stock, it's ready.

How wet should a wet to dry dressing be? ›

Squeeze the gauze so that it is just damp, not soaking wet. Unfold the damp gauze and place it over your wound. Always wash your hands well with soap and water before changing your dressing.

How long can dressing sit out before baking? ›

Let the dressing sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes, before you bake it according to directions. Alternatively, you can freeze the dressing after Step 5, and store it in the freezer up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge, and let the dish sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking.
