Good to know: Common questions about travel insurance

Do I need travel insurance if I’m staying in Canada?

Yes, it’s a good idea. Coverage for trip cancellation, interruption and baggage are just as relevant for a fishing trip to BC as they are for a week in the Caribbean. Also, OHIP may not fully reimburse certain medical costs incurred in another province, so purchasing travel insurance while remaining in the country makes sense for this reason as well.

Can I buy cancellation insurance if my travel medical is covered through work?

Yes. Travel insurance is sold in a tailored way, so you can choose the coverages you need, and leave the rest.

Does travel insurance cover COVID-19?

Yes and no. In most cases, if you come down with COVID-19 during your trip, as long as you didn’t test positive before you left on your trip and didn’t fly in spite of government travel advisory, expenses related to COVID should be covered.

On the other hand, if you have to cancel your trip or cut it short due to a COVID-19-related travel advisory or border closure, or just because you’re concerned about an outbreak, that’s not covered.

Does travel insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

No. If you have a medical condition that has been documented and you require medical treatment for that condition during your trip, it is not covered. If a pre-existing condition causes you to cancel or interrupt your trip, that is also not covered.

Does insurance pay directly for covered expenses?

Not usually. You will be given a wallet card with phone numbers for different parts of the world. When you become aware that you might need to make a claim, call the appropriate number. Your adjuster can advise you which expenses are covered and which are not. Some expenses can be paid directly to the medical practitioner or service provider. In most cases, you will pay costs up front, keep receipts, then submit a claim for reimbursem*nt.
