The Egmont Group comprises various groups that oversee and/or contribute to its main operations and overall goal of strengthening information-sharing mechanisms among its members to combat money laundering, terrorist financing, and associated predicate crimes.

These groups include:

Heads of Financial Intelligence Units

The Heads of FIU (HoFIU) are the Egmont Group’s main governing body. The HoFIU make consensus-driven decisions on matters affecting membership, structure, budget, and key principles. The HoFIU communicate regularly through the Egmont Secure Web and meet at least once a year during the Annual Egmont Group Plenary meeting.

Egmont Committee

The Egmont Committee (EC) is the consultation and coordination mechanism for the HoFIU and Working Groups. The EC’s primary functions include assisting the Egmont Group’s various activities, from internal coordination and administration to representation at international fora. The EC also oversees the Egmont Group Secretariat’s work and is comprised of both working group and regional group members.

Working Groups

The Egmont Group has four unique Working Groupswith mandates to support member FIUs. The Working Groups are each led by a Chair and Vice-Chairs and include:

  • Information Exchange Working Group (IEWG)
  • Membership, Support, and Compliance Working Group (MSCWG)
  • Policy and Procedures Working Group (PPWG)
  • Technical Assistance and Training Working Group (TATWG)

Regional Groups

The Regional Groups assist the Egmont Group with accomplishing its goals of development, cooperation, and sharing of expertise on a regional level. Each Regional Group is represented by Regional Representatives on the Egmont Committee. Each member FIU is a Regional Group member.

Egmont Group Secretariat

The Egmont Group Secretariat (EGS) provides strategic, technical, and administrative support to the HoFIU, the EC, the Working Groups, and the Regional Groups. Functioning based on the Egmont Group Charter, the EGS also assists with managing the content posted in the Egmont Secure Web’s online communities. The EGS is headed by the Executive Secretary and reports directly to the Chair of the Egmont Group. The EGS was established in July 2007 and is based in Canada.Jérôme BEAUMONT is the current Executive Secretary of the Egmont Group.

Egmont Centre of FIU Excellence and Leadership

The ECOFEL was created as an engine and hub to assist FIUs as they strive towards excellence and leadership.The ECOFEL’s goal is to protect, position, and promote FIUs within their national systems and internationally.The ECOFEL aims to:

  • Share expertise and best practices amongst FIUs
  • Build networks within the AML/CFT community
  • Introduce new and innovative tools for FIU operations and development
  • Strengthen cooperation with international partner organizations
  • Empower FIUs to position themselves domestically and internationally as leaders

Activities include mentoring, coaching, staff exchanges, specialized training courses, a reference library, E-Learning platform development, and other support mechanisms.The ECOFEL has been active since April 2018, is fully integrated in the Egmont Group, and is located within the Egmont Group Secretariat in Canada.

Heads of Financial Intelligence Units
