Samuel Ortom, the former Governor of Benue State and a powerful figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has made a bold declaration: he's all in on reclaiming Benue for the PDP in the 2027 elections. But here's where it gets controversial... some might question whether a former governor can truly orchestrate a comeback for a party out of power. Is it realistic, or just wishful thinking?
Ortom's renewed commitment comes amidst swirling rumors of his potential defection – rumors he vehemently denies, labeling them as the work of "mischief makers." He insists his loyalty remains firmly with the PDP and that he envisions a stronger, more unified party emerging in the lead-up to the 2027 polls. This declaration was made during a gathering in Makurdi, where Ortom hosted members of the PDP G-14 and other key stakeholders representing 14 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across Zones A and B Senatorial Districts. To put it simply, he gathered some of the most influential PDP members from a large portion of Benue State.
Ortom urged these stakeholders to remain steadfast in their efforts to rebuild the party. While he clarified that he won't be personally seeking any office in the upcoming elections, he pledged his full support to PDP candidates at every level. He also offered a crucial piece of advice to those aspiring for positions: engage in extensive consultations. Don't be discouraged, he said, by the ongoing defections to the ruling party. This is a common occurrence in Nigerian politics, where individuals sometimes switch allegiances to align with the party in power, often seen as a strategic move for personal or political gain. But is it truly strategic, or does it simply undermine the integrity of the political system?
Dr. Laha Dzever, speaking on behalf of the PDP G-14, pledged unwavering loyalty and support to Ortom, praising his "purposeful leadership." This highlights the significant influence Ortom still wields within the party. Also echoing this sentiment, the state Deputy Chairman of the PDP, Azua Ashongo, advised party stakeholders in the LGAs to prioritize fielding only credible candidates in the next elections. This, he argued, would solidify Ortom's efforts in strengthening the party. Ashongo further lauded the former governor for his sacrifices, urging others to follow his example. And this is the part most people miss... fielding credible candidates is not just about winning elections; it's about building public trust and ensuring good governance. It's about selecting individuals who are not only capable but also ethical and dedicated to serving the people.
Ambassador Chive Kaave and Senator Fred Orti added their voices, assuring Ortom of the commitment of members from Zones A and B, respectively, to working towards returning the PDP to power and driving development in the state. Their words emphasize the regional aspect of Benue politics, highlighting the importance of unity across different senatorial districts.
Other speakers at the gathering included Mr. William Ortyom, representing PDP members in the Benue State House of Assembly; Simon Anyamkande, speaking on behalf of PDP local government chairmen; Mrs. Veronica Gajir, representing women; and Joel Kôrinjô, speaking for the youths. The diverse representation underscores the PDP's attempt to engage various segments of the Benue population.
The meeting itself was a significant event, attended by a wide range of PDP figures, including serving and former members of the National Executive Committee, former members of the Board of Trustees, local government party chairmen, national delegates, former aspirants, ex-government appointees, and other party officials and stakeholders. The sheer number and variety of attendees demonstrate the importance placed on this initiative to reposition the party.
Now, here's a question for you: Do you believe Ortom's commitment and influence are enough to revitalize the PDP in Benue State? Can a party out of power truly reclaim its former glory, or are there deeper systemic issues at play? And what role do you think defections play in the overall political landscape of Nigeria?
