They’re payments to UK accounts that are guaranteed to arrive on the day you make them, as long as you set up the payment in branch, by phone (Business customers only) before 3.30pm or online before 5pm.*

If you send us your instruction after the cut-off time, on a weekend or on a public holiday, we’ll usually send the payment the next working day. Sometimes payments are held for security reasons – these won’t be sent until we’ve finished our review.

CHAPS payments are useful if you need to send someone money urgently, or if you buy a house and your solicitor needs to send money to the seller.

You’ll have to pay a £20 fee if you cancel or change your CHAPS payment.

You don’t have to use CHAPS payments – you can transfer money for free using Faster Payments. As long as the sending and receiving bank or building society use Faster Payments too, then the payment will arrive almost immediately (though sometimes it can take up to two hours).

You won’t be charged for CHAPS payments sent to your account with us, but remember – the other bank might charge the sender. You'll need to give the sender some information about your account

  • Your account sort code – you’ll find this on the bottom of your card or on your statement
  • Your account number – you’ll find this on the bottom of your card or on your statement

How do I make a CHAPS payment?

You can do this in a branch or you can do it online, if you’re registered for Online Banking and you have a PINsentry.

If you’re a Business customer, you can make a CHAPS payment using Telephone Banking, if you’re registered for it.

You can set up the payment in a branch or over the phone up to 20 working days before the payment date.

You’ll need to have enough cleared money in your account. If you don’t have enough, we won’t send the payment.

If you’re sending a CHAPS payment to someone in the UK, we'll need some details about the account you’re sending the money to

  • Sort code
  • Name of the person
  • Account name
  • Account number
  • Amount to be sent
  • Reference or any other payment details

We might need to do some checks, so you’ll need to confirm your phone number when you request your payment, in case we need to give you a call. We’ll send your payment when we’ve finished our checks.

If we can’t reach you over the phone, we’ll leave a message and ask you to call us back. If this happens, we won’t send your payment until we’ve spoken to you, so remember to get back to us.

    Log in to Online Banking, then choose ‘Same-day payment (CHAPS)’, under the ‘Move money’ menu.

    Make sure you set up the payment before the 5pm cut-off time, otherwise your payment won’t be sent on the same day*.

    There’s no fee for each CHAPS payment if you’re a Personal, Premier or Platinum customer. If you’re a Business Banking customer, there’s a £15 fee.

    If your payment is under your total daily payment limit, you can use our Faster Payments Service instead, for free. Just choose ‘Make a payment’.

    Remember

    • Always double check the sort code and account number before you send a payment
    • Check the amount and payment reference, especially if you’re paying a business or paying a bill
    • If you think you’ve sent a payment to the wrong account, it’s important to act quickly – if you can’t get your money back from the payee yourself, contact us straightaway
    • You can manage your CHAPS payments online – go to the 'Move money' menu and select 'Manage international and same-day payments' under 'Manage and track'. There’s a fee of £20 to cancel or change a CHAPS payment
