New figures suggest that people who are denied Personal Independence Payments (PIP) should appeal the decision, as it's likely to be overturned. The data covers PIP application outcomes from October 2018 to October 2023.
PIP payments are given to those who need help with daily tasks. Typically, applicants must pass assessments before receiving the money. The amount received depends on the level of support deemed to be needed.
DWP officials decide if someone meets the criteria for support, and many people are refused PIP. If they are unhappy with the decision, there is an option to appeal. The latest figures show that it is often worth it for unsuccessful applicants to launch an appeal.

Of the complaints that reach tribunals, a significant 70 percent are overturned and 'revised in favour of the customer'. The DWP further explained that eight percent of all initial decisions following a PIP assessment were appealed, and three percent have been overturned at a tribunal hearing, reports Birmingham Live.
While not every appeal will make it to tribunal, the success rate shows that those applicants who do so stand a good chance of overturning their case.
Over five years, three million PIP cases were decided. Just over half of applicants were awarded the support (56 percent), with the rest left disappointed. People with certain conditions are more likely to be awarded PIP, and it's likely some people applied more than once.
The DWP said: "70 percent of the DWP decisions cleared at a tribunal hearing were 'overturned' (which is where the decision is revised in favour of the customer). Eight percent of initial decisions following a PIP assessment have been appealed and 3 percent have been overturned at a tribunal hearing."
