To be able to make a claim for PIP, the person has to satisfy some basic conditions:
Be over 16 and under 65 (with some exceptions if they are being transferred from DLA) and have a condition which affects their daily living or mobility
Not have any Immigration or residency restrictions (Ask for more information during the initial claim telephone call if you need help)
PIP is not taxable or means tested and there are no National Insurance conditions. It ispaid to the person, if they qualify, whether they are in or out of work.
There is a standard or an enhanced rate of payment available within the Daily Livingcomponent and Mobility component. You can be paid one of these rates for one or bothsections, depending on the nature of your difficulties. Please check https://www.gov.uk/pip/overview for more information on the amount for each rate.
How much is PIP per month? Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is now worth £434.20 every four weeks at the higher daily living rate and £290.60 every four weeks at the lower rate. You could also get £303.00 every four weeks at the higher mobility rate and £114.80 at the lower rate.
PIP (Personal Independence Payment) is the benefit that's gradually replacing DLA (Disability Living Allowance) for people aged 16 or older. If you were born before 9 April 1948, you can't move to PIP - you can keep getting and renewing your DLA.
In order to be entitled to PIP , claimants have to satisfy a qualifying period of 3 months and a prospective test of 9 months. These 2 conditions are referred to as the 'required period condition' and help establish that the health condition or disability is likely to be long term.
Benefits and Work has compiled a list of over 500 conditions arranged in order of how hard it is to get an award of PIP, using the DWP's own Stat-Xplore database. The overall average success rate for PIP claims is 52%. But this can vary greatly depending on the condition.
You could claim up to a maximum of £184.30 a week, but you may receive less, depending on the areas of your life which are affected by your depression.
6.1 How long is PIP paid for? A PIP award can be indefinite but is usually for a fixed period. The length depends on an assessment of how likely it is that your daily living and mobility needs may change over time.
It can take up to 6 months from when you first contact the DWP to when you get your first payment. If the DWP decide you can get PIP, they'll pay you the money you should have got from the date you started your claim.
You might also be eligible if you have difficulty getting around because of a cognitive or mental health condition, like anxiety. PIP is not affected by income or savings, it is not taxable and you can get it whether you are in work or not.
Are there any disadvantages in receiving a disability allowance/PIP? Yes. You're expected to live on an income that is only a small fraction of what your salary was, on insurance that covers only a fraction of your medical costs, which are exorbitant, as you're dealing with a a permanent disability.
After applying for PIP, it can take up to four months to receive any money. PIP cannot be backdated but your payments start from the date you made your claim to cover the handling time at the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).
