How does pin trading work at Disney? ›

Here's how it works: Meet a Disney Cast Member wearing a pin-trading lanyard. Find a Disney pin with your favorite Disney character, attraction, movie or design. Trade your Disney pin with the Cast Member.

There are character pins, park pins, resort pins, sports pins, holiday pins, etc. Basically, anything and everything you love about Disney, there is likely a pin for it. The pins typically range in price from around $8 for a basic pin to around $17 for a special event pin - of course, prices can and will vary.

Every resort and most gift shops throughout Disney World and Disney Springs will either have a trading board set up near the cash register or the CM will be wearing a lanyard with pins on it; just ask to see their pins for trading. Very simple. Have fun!

There is no need to have a specific Disney lanyard, or even a lanyard at all, if you wish to trade pins. The only requirement when trading pins is that it must be an authentic Disney pin. Since I usually use a small purse or fanny pack when I travel to the parks, I often put a pin or two right on the bag.

Letters and numbers are evenly spaced on authentic Disney pins and they are not sold with any spelling errors on the pin. If the back of the pin has uneven letter or number spacing, or there are clear spelling errors on the pin, it is likely not an authentic one.

These pins may look similar to authentic Disney pins, but they are often of lesser quality and can be easily spotted by experienced collectors. The funny (and good for collectors) thing about Disney pins is they never go down in value — only up. For example, the “holy grails” of Disney pins are called “profiles.” These are pins that illustrate a popular Disney character, facing right, holding an object, with a glittery background.

A trading pin bag is one of the best ways to store your pins. These bags have separate folders inside where you can store your pins safely. They will keep dust, dirt, and debris away from your precious pins, so they always look brand new.

Guests must trade with Cast Members, one pin at a time, with the pin back in place (pins have functional sharp posts). Guests can make up to two pin trades per cast member per day. You can only trade Disney pins (sorry, no Harry Potter or non-Disney pins) If the Cast Member or the board already has that pin, you need to trade them for one they do not have.
