For a game that has brought so much joy to so many so quickly, Wordle has also sparked its fair share of controversy and consternation too.

The rules of Wordle are simple: You get six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Sure, there was a hint of scandal when people realised a word could contain multiple instances of a letter (say BOOTY), but that letter would only show up as a tile once. There’s been a bit of juice too about the American spellings since The New York Times bought the game. But beyond that, you might have thought, what is there to argue about?

As it happens, quite a bit.

Play it, don’t say it
The number-one rule of Wordle etiquette is so obvious you’d think you wouldn’t even need to say it, but here goes: don’t say it. When you get the solution, keep it SHTUM.

It’s a rule perhaps best demonstrated in the breach. “I taught my mum Wordle yesterday but didn’t teach her the etiquette,” one American player tweeted last week. “I woke up this morning to a screenshot of today’s word. We had to have a sit down.”

Clever clues are not clever at all
Ostensibly “clever” puns in which you drop clues to that day’s answer are not SMART at all, they just ruin it for lots of people. Please, in the name of common decency, CEASE now.

For some people, the only way to fully observe this etiquette is to only post references to the previous day’s Wordle, by which time it’s too late for anyone to profit or lose by it. The golden rule is the OLDEN rule.

You don’t have to post your score, you know
Of course, the whole when-to-post conundrum could be avoided simply by not posting at all. You know it’s not compulsory, right?

The ability to share has been a key factor in the explosion of the game’s popularity, but it’s also the source of most etiquette breaches. The purists would argue it’s best to keep your successes to yourself – or a small group of fellow players, in private exchanges – rather than to humblebrag in your social media POSTS for all the world to see.

If you insist on posting, include your fails too
Oh, and it’s not really humblebragging if you only post the times you get it in one (100 per cent fluke), two (80 per cent fluke) or three (where the skill really kicks in). Unless you’re also posting your fives, sixes and strike-outs, it’s bragging, plain and simple. Please, do not BOAST.

One screen good, two screens bad
There have been dark mutterings of people using two browsers (or even two devices) simultaneously, one to work out the answer to the day’s puzzle in however many turns it takes, the other to produce the answer for sharing (two being the optimum display of brilliance). Just no. If you need to CHEAT at a game you play on your own, there’s something seriously WRONG with you.

Using pen and paper to work it out offline is almost as bad. It’s a BRAIN game, not a write-out-all-the-possible-solutions-until-you-get-it-right game. Sheesh.

Maybe wear a cape
If etiquette pioneer Philip Stanhope were around today and inclined to update his 1774 tome Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman, he would no doubt instruct his offspring thusly:

“One ought not to attempt to solve the day’s Wordle in such a location as might permit one’s workings therein and thereof to be observed by a proximal gentleman or gentle lady. For instance, while using public transport.

“Should one find oneself attempting to solve said puzzle in such a location (EGADS!) one might be induced to make use of a cape or other hooded vestment so as to better obfuscate the workings therein from prying eyes.

“Etiquette demands nothing less.”
