Postage due..where to leave it? - USPS Postal Regulations ? (2024)

This was my first postage due book. I guess I put the money in a baggie in my mailbox right?? We have different post people all of the time and I want the correct person to get the money...should I take it to the Post Office or leave it in my mailbox?? Thanks..if anyone knows what to do...

Usually, they have a postage due envelope they leave you with the amount written on it. You can just put the money inside that and put it in your mailbox. If they didn't leave one, I'd put it in an envelope with a note to your postal carrier describing the package/envelope (maybe include the return address?) and telling them the date the postage due item was delivered. Just leave it in your mailbox and put the flag up.

Thanks..they had postage due stamped on the envelope..so I will putthe envelopeand the bag with the money in it out in my mailbox.

My building has a bank of mailboxes built into the wall. I've never gotten the envelope except once when we had a sub and that was to return my change.

Since I don't have a red flag to put up, I tape a note to the outside of my box and then I tape a small baggie with the exact change inside the box near the top so the carrier can get it out when he tilts the boxes open.

My PO always just gives me the package and never asks for money. I tried paying the carrier once and she refused to take the money saying it wasn't my fault. I just gave up paying after that.

my carrier leaves me an envelope with the amount due and I just put it in there and she takes it. she does deliver the item but then she knows me so wonder if that makes a difference?

It actually depends on the carrier. City carriers don't have access to those little envelopes, by the way. As a city carrier, if I've signed for a postage due item and am required to collect the money in order to be 'cleared' in the afternoon, I'll go ahead and pay for it myself. I have enough other things to be concerned with during the day!

Thats very generous of you Connie! I've gotten a postage due stamp once or twice on books sent to me, but it's never been more than 50 cents and there's never been anything indicating how I should pay the difference. Maybe my postal carrier paid my postage due as well. <3

I have found that this varies dramatically from carrier to carrier, but I would just leave the money in a little baggie with a note for the carrier. It might have come out of his/her pocket. If not, he/she might just leave it for you.

I had a book in my P O Box that was stamped POSTAGE DUE .34; however ... the affixed postage was an APC First Class sticker, presumably generated by the weight of that book on the APC scale?? I did not contact a clerk about paying it.

As a rural carrier i pay for alot of postage dues. Most customers are very good about putting the money back in the little brown envelope to repay me. We do have a "naughty" list though of customers who are notorious for not paying us back,so we no longer pay for their postage dues. That list is fairly small, most are grateful and quick to pay it back.

I am in the city and my carrier left my parcel and an envelope with it.

Why do we use return address when we mail things anyways? Shouldn't things be returned to the sender if it's postage due???
