TOKYO -- Fewer than 10% in Japan refer to the X social media platform by its current name, while over two thirds still call it Twitter, a Tokyo-based company's survey has revealed.
An online survey between Sept. 29 and Oct. 3 of 5,000 people aged 15 through 69 by market research firm MMD Labo Inc. found that 67.7% of respondents called the social network by its former name, Twitter, while just 9.1% called it X. Users of the platform represented 45.3% of all respondents, and more than half of those in their teens and 20s, at 63.2% and 59.3% respectively, were using the social media. With just 30.6% of those in their 60s on X, older generations tended to use the platform less.
Twitter was renamed X this July. The blue bird logo was also replaced with a white-on-black "X" mark. Some users who were accustomed to the old name expressed anger at the changes.
In this survey, 18.4% said they were considering leaving the platform at some point in the future, while 25.2% said they had plans to give it up. Asked which alternate platforms they would migrate to, the top answer was Instagram with 40.8%, followed by YouTube at 25.6%.
MMD Labo researcher Minami Ito said, "We found that a lot of people call it Twitter because 'X' is not very well understood by others."
