Re-Taping Tape-In Hair Extensions (2024)

The best part about Tape-Ins is that they can be reused up to 3 times! The key to making them last are the follow-up appointments, every 6-8 weeks. During these move-up appointments, you'll be removing, and re-taping Tape-In Hair Extensions. It's a simple process, but if done improperly can cause slippage. That's why we're going to give you a step-by-step on the proper Aqua technique!

Removing Tape-Ins

Obviously, before you can move-up the extensions, you have to take them out of the hair. For other brands this proves to be challenging due to the difficulty of removal and the residue left behind. Thanks to Aquas' reliable tape and removers, this is hardly ever an issue! Our compound has a synergy between the cutting properties of alcohol and the absorbing capabilities of oil. This lets the solution naturally break down the adhesive, which is then easily washed out. If you want more information on our removers and the difference between the two, you can read our previous blog post.

Quick Tip: Let the Removers soak in the hair extension tabs for at least 30-60 seconds. Gently start pulling the tab from the middle downwards; it should come apart with ease. If there is still resistance, continue spraying the Express Remover between the bonds until they come loose.

After you've removed all of the tape, it's time to prep the hair with our Aqua Prep Shampoo to remove any oils and build-up in the hair. Once the hair is clean and dry, it's finally time to begin re-taping!

Re-Taping Tape-In Hair Extensions

Take each individual Tape-In Hair Extension, and use a small amount of Express Remover to clean off any leftover residue from the previous application. Be sure to leave the adhesive that is already on the extension attached. After it's dry, take one of the Re-Tape Tabs and carefully line it up with the old adhesive and place it directly on top (sticky side facing the extension). Use your fingers to press any air bubbles out before reapplying them to your client.
