There are several areas that one can explore in Red Dead Redemption, with one particularly notable area being the state of New Austin. Boasting gorgeous locales and some impressive world-building, the state of New Austin has featured in both games and features a ton of details and the like that most players simply aren't aware of. Keeping this in mind, here are ten of the best things that players need to know about New Austin.
Given the hints that have appeared throughout the game, one can assume that New Austin's borders are shared with that of California. The biggest proof of this is that Gaptooth Ridge has a strong resemblance to the borders of Arizona and California.
Along with this, there's a side quest titled "California" in Red Dead Redemption where John Marston outright says that California is to the west of this state.
9 There Are Strong Shades Of Texas In New Austin
As for the state that New Austin itself is supposed to represent, a large number of people support the notion that New Austin is the game's version of Texas, with various locations in the game— such as Hennigan's Stead and Stillwater Creek— bearing a strong resemblance to this real-world state.
However, there's one problem with this theory— as per a report in the in-game magazineNew Hanover Gazette, the state of Texas actually exists in the world of Red Dead Redemption!
8 New Austin Was Declared As A State On The Same Year As Texas
Another strong piece of evidence that adds further weight to the idea of New Austin being based on Texas is the year in which this area was officially declared to be a state.

As per in-game knowledge, New Austin was declared as a state in 1845— the same year when Texas was annexed by the United States and ended up becoming the 28th state of the country.
7 The Original Game's Westernmost Point Is An Area In New Austin Itself
In the original game, there's a racing track at the edge of Gaptooth Ridge which is notable for a rather interesting reason.
As per the in-game map, this area of the map is considered to be the westermost point of the game, which is a rather neat little fact that most people aren't really aware of.
6 There Was A Glitch That Allowed Players To Enter New Austin Before The Epilogue Of Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 features Dutch and the gang fleeing from New Austin after the entire gang became notorious in the Great Plains and Tall Trees. So, due to this reason, Arthur was unable to enter this area, and players could only explore this nostalgic area after reaching the epilogue of the game.
That being said, there was actually a glitch that allowed players to explore this area without the law being on their back at every step of the way. Unfortunately, this exploit was removed with the1.7.2 update.
5 There's Cut Content Proving That Arthur Was Supposed To Enter New Austin At One Point
While entering New Austin illegitimately as Arthur ends up netting no unique lines of dialogue whatsoever, there's actually cut content which suggests that Arthur was supposed to enter this area at one point— something that doesn't end up happening in the base game.
This cut content includes unique drawings of the locations of New Austin by Arthur and some lines of dialogue as well!
4 New Austin Is The Largest Territory In Red Dead Redemption 2
A rather fun tidbit about New Austin is the fact that this territory is actually the largest area that players can explore in Red Dead Redemption 2.
The fact that players can only unlock this area in the epilogue is a testament to the meat of this game and why it's considered to be one of the greatest open-world titles of all time.
3 New Austin HasOnly One Story Mission InThe Sequel
However, while New Austin's size might point towards the fact that it'll play a major role in the epilogue, the reality of this situation is anything but.

For some puzzling reason, there's only one story mission centered in this area in Red Dead Redemption 2—"An Honest Day's Labors". However, given the massive nature of this map and the interesting encounters that lie within, players would still have plenty of things to do in this area regardless.
2 There's A House Marked On The Map Of Red Dead Redemption 2 That Is Absent In The Game
If the player opens the map in Red Dead Redemption 2 and checks the area southeast of Rathskeller Fort in New Austin, they'll see a house that is marked on said map.
However, this house is absent in the main game. In fact, even the first game in the series has no house in this area either, making players wonder whether this house was nothing more than an error.
1 Player's Can Exit The Boundaries Of The Area Into Unmarked Territory In Both Games
Both games have instances where players can go outside the boundaries of New Austin into unmarked territory. Whether this was intentional or not is anyone's guess... although most people lead towards the latter in this regard.
In the first game, players can head to a snowy area north of MacFarlane's Ranch that is outside the boundaries of New Austin. Meanwhile, in the sequel, players can cross the Sea of Coronado and pass through some ravines to get to an unmarked area of the map, which people can use to glitch into Mexico.
