Repair Corrupted Word Files With SecureRecovery®
SecureRecovery® for Word is an effective data recovery application designed to restore information from corrupted Microsoft Word files. Word is a text editor that is widely used by both individuals and enterprises. As a result, an increasing number of Word users experience corrupted .doc or .docx files.
SecureRecovery® for Word is designed to repair Word documents by scanning, analyzing the corrupted file, and exporting all available data. All restored data is then saved in a new .rtf document and becomes available for processing. Our tool repairs text, formatting, tables, bulleted lists, embedded graphics (images are placed at the end of the recovered document), charts and drawings, headers and footnotes, fields, URLs, OLE objects, and more.
This program only analyzes the damaged file. It does not change the original document. If the document is severley damaged, some data loss is inevitable.
SecureRecovery® for Word works with text files of various formats:
- Microsoft Word documents of different versions, including .doc, .docx and .docm files
- Rich Text documents (.rtf files).
Fix and Recover Word Files
In order to repair Word files, it is necessary to first determine if your document is actually corrupt. A Word file is corrupt when its data has discrepancies that prevent the file from opening with Microsoft Word. If you got an error message when trying to open your file, the application crashed, or the file opened as a mix of random characters, then your Word file is most likely corrupted.
Not to worry! Fortunately, in most cases, only 50% of the file is corrupted. SecureRecovery® for Word was designed to repair and restore the remaining non-corrupted data.
Using SecureRecovery® for Word
- Backup the corrupted document(s) before proceeding with any recovery activities. Use reliable non-local media such as CD or network drive to store backups.
- Start SecureRecovery® for Word.
- Select the Recover... item in the File menu. A file selection dialog will open.
- Select the corrupted document and press "Recover" button.
- Wait until the file processing is completed.
- When prompted, save the recovered document, assigning it a new name. By default, Recovery for Word adds "Recovered" to the file name, i.e. "Corrupted document.DOC" will be saved as "Recovered Corrupted document.RTF"
File corruption can render a Microsoft Word document impossible to use, or even prevent access altogether. SecureRecovery® for Word was built as a solution to this difficult situation. This dedicated file recovery tool repairs damaged Word files, preserving the original formatting, graphics and — most importantly — the text.

Frequently asked questions
I cannot open my Word document, or it appears corrupted and unusable. Will SecureRecovery for Word help me restore the document to its original condition?
SecureRecovery for Word can repair many types of corruption, restoring your Word documents to a usable state. Results will vary from case to case, but we offer a free demo to help you evaluate the program’s capabilities. The demo lets you see a sample output of recovered text along with placeholders, which indicate the location of recoverable information.
Does the demo provide an accurate example of this utility’s capabilities?
Yes, the demo is almost exactly the same as the full version of the program, but its output is limited to several paragraphs. When it exceeds this limit, it uses placeholder text for the rest of the document.
You should note that if any elements do not appear in the demo -- for instance, formatting -- the full document may not be completely recoverable, and the missing elements will not be recovered by the full version of the program.
What steps should I take before trying the demo version or the full version of SecureRecovery for Word?
You should back up your corrupted Word files. This is an important step, because the recovery process may alter the original files, and a backup will allow you to take further actions if the first recovery attempt fails.
Is it normal for Word files to appear smaller in size after the recovery is completed?
Yes. SecureRecovery for Word will avoid badly damaged areas, and will not present them in the recovery output. This can reduce the file size. In some cases, severe corruption may prevent certain features from being reproduced in the output. A common example is formatting, which may be partially or completely lost. This also reduces file sizes.
If you use the demo version of the program, file sizes may be significantly different due to the placeholder text that the application uses in place of recoverable text.
I have an Enterprise or a Service license, and I want to run SecureRecovery for Word through the command line. What should I know?
Make sure that you have created the output directory (the area where the recovered documents will be stored). If you are creating a batch file, you can use the patterns ‘*’ and ‘?’ as signifiers for grouped symbols and individual symbols respectively, for example, *.docx or ???Brian.docx.
The command call line is presented below.
wr.exe “”
You should not use angle brackets. Note that command line access is not granted through the Standard license of SecureRecovery for Word.
