What proof of residence is
Proof of residence is proof that you have lived in Ireland for a certain period of time.
To apply for citizenship by naturalisation based on residence, you must prove that you have been resident in the State for at least 5 years (1,825 or 1,826 days depending on Leap Years) out of the last 9 years.
This includes 1 year (365 or 366 days depending on Leap Years) of continuous residence immediately before the date you apply.
What you need to do
You must send us 3 different documents for each year you claim you were resident here to use as proof of residence. You should submit photocopies of each document and ensure that each document shows your name and address.
In some circ*mstances, you may be asked for extra documents or information to prove your residence over certain periods of time.
If you spent long periods of time abroad, you must provide as much detailed information as possible in support of your application. On occasion additional information may be required.
Documents that are eligible as proof of residence are as follows:
- your P60 for years up to 2018 or Employment Detail Summary from 2019 onwards
- if you are in receipt of a payment from the Department of Social Protection you must provide a statement of payments/benefits received for each year
- mortgage statements if you own your home
- tenancy/rental agreement if you are renting
- bank statements for at least 3 months of each year showing day-to-day transactions or Direct Debits for utility bills. Online shopping transactions are not eligible
- an employment letter from your current employer, which includes your name, address, date you commenced work, as well as 3 recent payslips
If you are financially maintained by your spouse/parent you should provide evidence that they have the financial means to support you as listed above. You must still provide 3 proofs of residence in your name for each year.
Alternative proof of residence
If you are unable to provide any of the above for each year, you may submit the following:
- utility bills such as electricity or gas bills, or bills for fixed line telephone, internet or TV
- a letter from you GP showing your name, address and dates of attendance
- a letter confirming attendance at medical appointments which include your name and address
- a letter on headed paper from Sports Club/Social Club/voluntary organisation which shows your name, address and dates of attendance or involvement in the club or organisation
- a letter from your child’s school confirming their attendance and your involvement in the school life of your child
- any other proofs, similar to above, that in your opinion clearly demonstrates your residence in the State for the period in question
It is up to the applicant to provide the strongest evidence possible as to residence. This is an essential requirement.
