So you’re ready to ride off into the sunset and start a new adventure in the Lone Star State. But before you move to Texas, you want to make sure you find the safest city possible—especially if you’re moving there to start a family. So let’s get to it: What are the safest cities in Texas?

First, let’s admit that lists like this aren’t always an accurate way to determine a city’s level of safety. So make sure to do enough research to back up whatever you find online until you feel comfortable enough to make a decision.

The Texas crime rate stats we’re using are based on official data reported by the FBI.¹ The cities are ranked by number of total crimes and law enforcement employees per 1,000 residents.² Those total crimes are made up of two different crime categories:

• Violent crimes. These are defined by the FBI as murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.³

• Property crimes. These include burglary, larceny (theft of personal property), motor vehicle theft and arson (setting fire to property).⁴

For comparison with the stats below, the national estimated crime rate in a year was nearly 370 violent crimes and almost 2,200 property crimes per 100,000 residents.⁵ In other words, that’s about four violent crimes and 22 property crimes per 1,000 residents.

With that said, let’s unpack the safest cities in Texas so you can compare their stats and narrow down an area you’ll feel comfortable moving to.

10. Keller

Kicking us off as one of the cities in Texas with the lowest crime rate is Keller. Located just outside of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, Keller is primarily a residential area with plenty of trails for hiking and biking.

9. Highland Village

A little more north of the Dallas-Fort Worth area is Highland Village. This is also considered one of the safest places to live in Texas. Nestled in the southwest branch of Lewisville Lake, Highland Village is a great place to live for water lovers. Locals enjoy fishing, fireworks and an annual hot air balloon festival.

8. Manvel

Just south of Houston, Manvel has all the amenities you could want in a place to live. The family can enjoy a trip to the local petting zoo or corn maze or a stroll through one of its many parks. There’s also horseback riding for land lovers and kayaking and rafting for water lovers.

7. Roma

Roma is located along the southern tip of Texas on the Rio Grande. Positioned directly across from Mexico, Roma offers some pretty sweet scenic views of the border region. Plus, with bluffs that overlook the river, you can do some serious birdwatching (if that’s your kind of thing). The valley is frequented by brown jays, red-billed pigeons, cave swallows, ringed kingfishers, Couch’s kingbird and Altamira orioles.

Just east of Dallas, Fate is another one of the safest cities to live in Texas. It offers a tight-knit community that makes it a great place to build friendships and raise a family. The city also has hundreds of acres of land ready for development right off its main interstate. Living there gives you the feeling that you’re part of something that’s growing.

After a long history as a farming community, Murphy still offers a rural vibe. Located just northeast of Dallas, the city provides plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy—including parks, farmers markets, play museums, arcades and shopping centers.

4. Colleyville

Hitting the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex right between the eyes is Colleyville, another city in Texas with one of the lowest crime rates. Colleyville offers a bunch of charming playgrounds, parks and nature trails. There’s a nearby aquatic center complete with a lazy river. And there’s a vineyard where you can celebrate your fancy events.

This Dallas-Fort Worth suburb is somewhat of a bougie area. Built around a beautiful golf course, Trophy Club owes its unique name to Ben Hogan—one of the greatest professional golfers to have ever played the game.
