Why do they still call it the Negro league? ›

By 1930, essentially every major US outlet had adopted "Negro" as the accepted term for black people. By about 1970, the term "Negro" had fallen into disfavor, but by then the Negro leagues were mere historic artifacts.

The Negro National League disbanded in 1948, but the Negro American League kept operating until 1960, the year after the Red Sox became the last major league team to sign a black player (Pumpsie Green).

Below is a list of 52 players who played for major Negro league teams up to 1950 and eventually saw playing time for a Major League team. Of these, nine have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Upon the death of Willie Mays, Bill Greason is the sole surviving.

Taking advantage of the growth of the Black Northern urban populations during and following World War I, and insisting on Black ownership of the teams, Foster lead a group of team owners to create the Negro National League (NNL) in Kansas City, Missouri on February 14, 1920.

Although they didn't have much success on the field, finishing in last place in the NNL in 10 of their 13 seasons, the Black Yankees were among the Negro Leagues most visible franchises due to their connection to Yankee Stadium, one of a handful of parks the team called home over the years.

Three Negro Leaguers from that era are still living: Willie Mays, 93, Bill Greason, 99, and Ron “Schoolboy” Teasley, 97. Teasley was under the weather Wednesday and declined all media requests. But when he called his doctor, the physician — having heard the news — started asking about his Negro League career.

On May 30, 2024, Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred made the official announcement that the statistics of more than 2,300 Negro League players from the years 1920-1948 were officially incorporated into MLB's historical record, and that the records will become a permanent part of baseball history.

While many of the existing Negro League stadiums now are nothing more than a grass field with a grandstand or wall left remaining, Rickwood Field hosts games every year as a kind of "living museum." In 2024, the Cardinals and Giants will play on the hallowed grounds.

In 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first Black man to integrate the MLB, a move which marked the beginning of the end. The loss of the Negro leagues' biggest stars led to their demise in 1960. Stadiums like Hinchliffe in Paterson, New Jersey, would eventually fall into disrepair.

These forces converged to help create the “New Negro Movement” of the 1920s, which promoted a renewed sense of racial pride, cultural self-expression, economic independence, and progressive politics. Evoking the “New Negro,” the NAACP lobbied aggressively for the passage of a federal law that would prohibit lynching.

The league would resurface, however, as the Negro American League in 1937, with many of the same teams from the old Negro National League. The NAL would continue full-time and robust operations until one of its own, the Kansas City Monarchs' Jackie Robinson, broke Major League Baseball's color barrier in 1947.

Unlike in baseball, where the Negro leagues flourished, no true football Negro league was known to exist until 1946, and by this time, the major leagues had begun reintegrating.
