Securing Tarps: How to secure your tarps? | ABC Tarps (2024)

Securing your Tarp is more than protecting what is under the Tarp.

Tarps are used for a whole range of uses, ensuring that your Tarp is secure is critical not only for what you are protecting but also for ensuring the health and wellbeing of people and the longevity of the Tarp. Tarps can be secured in several ways – withRopes,Pegs, Bolts, Weightsor having theHeavy-Duty Tarp (stockpile Cover) dug into the ground and backfilled.

By ensuring that theTarpis secured this will ensure that the contents under the tarp is protected, it also ensures that theTarpitself does not get damaged. An incorrectly installedTarpwill normally result in movement of theTarp, this movement over a period will cause friction which eventually will lead to a weak spot and the potential of the tarp tearing. Quite clearly this will expose the items being “protected” to being exposed to damage.

It is imperative to ensure that Tarps are secured correctly for Occupational Health and Safety reasons, poorly secured tarps (or worst-case scenario of the dislodged tarp) will cause substantial damage or injury to fellow workers and or surrounding fixed assets.

What options are available:

Rope / Ratchet Straps:

As can be seen in this photo the Roof Tarp has been tightly secured using Ratchet Straps this has resulted in the tarp being secured tightly to the roof Minimising the opportunity for the tarp ballooning and also friction / rubbing on the roof potentially causing a weak spot.

Quite clearlyropecan also be used to secure the tarp, it is our recommendation that when installing the Tarp that you useall of the eyelets, whilst this may take a little longer to do it is worth the effort.

It should be noted that theABC Tarps are supplied without a rope attached,as we are unsure as to the required rope lengths for eachtarppurchased.Ropecan be purchased from ABC Tarps as an optional extra either by the Meter or in 125 Meter spools.

Springs are a great idea:

Springs are a great idea when installing Covers when the cover is going to be in place for an extended period. Once the rope is attached to the eyelets, we recommend that the spring is connected to the tail end of the rope, thespringis then connected to the mounting point – Hay Bale Twine, Hay Bolt, Pegs or a fixed mounting point.

By usingSprings this enables a small amount of giving on the tarp to lift in the circ*mstance of a strong wind getting under the tarp, the spring tension will cause the tarp to move back into position. The use ofSpringswill reduce the amount of pressure on the Brass Eyelets and ultimately add to the longevity of the tarp. Check out this video on our website showing the use of Springs when applying our covers onto a Haystack:
