Small Change, Big History: 7 Rare Dimes Sought By Collectors (2024)

Dimes have been a staple in American currency for over two centuries, with their small size making them a pocket change staple. But some rare dimes minted in the US are far more than just coins — they’re genuine treasures, steeped in history and incredibly limited in number.

From the iconic Carson City dimes to rare versions of the Roosevelt dime still minted today, each of these tiny coins holds a unique story and significance. In this blog, we'll take a journey through time to discover some of the greatest and most valuable dimes ever minted in the US, each with a unique story to tell.

1. 1894-S Barber Dime

The 1894-S Barber dime is a true gem of American coinage. With only a small number of specimens known to exist, this rare dime is considered not only one of the most valuable dimes in American history, but one of the most valuable coins in general. In auction, these iconic coins have sold for $1 million to $2 million.

This dime’s intricate design, featuring Liberty crowned with a Phrygian cap, doesn’t seem that different to other Barber coins. But it's the story behind the 1894-S Barber dime that truly sets it apart — the San Francisco Mint produced only 24 of them, and nobody really knows why. After a century, only 9 are known to survive today, adding to this coin’s mystique and allure (and price tag).

2. 1871-1874 Carson City Dimes

The Carson City dimes from the years 1871-1874 are highly sought after by collectors. These dimes were minted at the United States Branch Mint in Carson City, Nevada during a period of rapid expansion and economic growth in the western frontier. The coins were struck from 90% fine silver and feature the classic Liberty Seated design on the obverse and wreath on the reverse. These years had particularly low mintages and were highly circulated, so business strike and high-grade coins are very difficult to find.

However, there is one rare dime that stands out. In 1873, there was a push by the US Mint to convert how coins were weighed and measured from imperial units to metric ones. To make the dime an even 2.5 grams, the Mint needed to add exactly 10 milligrams. This was done by adding arrowheads on either side of the date. After this change was made, all coins that had been minted without arrows were melted down.

Except for one: the 1873-CC Liberty Seated dime “Without Arrows.” This rare dime is the sole survivor of the meltdown, making it the shining star of not only the Seated Liberty coin series, but the entire 19th century. It is, without a doubt, the most valuable dime to have ever been minted.

3. 1796-97 Draped Bust Dimes

Minted for just two years before their design was changed and a new type was created, the 1796 and 1797 Draped Bust dimes are rare dimes rich with history. This coin’s intricate obverse design features Lady Liberty draped in a flowing gown with a ribbon in her hair, surrounded by stars and the inscription "LIBERTY," while the reverse features an eagle perched on a cloud with its wings spread.

These coins were minted during a time of great change in the United States, as the country was still establishing its economic and political footing. The limited number of 1796-97 Draped Bust dimes, combined with their delicate design, has made them one of the most valuable dimes among collectors.

4. 1916-D Mercury Dime

The 1916-D Mercury dime is a small coin with a big story. It's a piece of history that transports you back to the second half of WW1, a time when the future of world powers was uncertain. Also known as the Winged Liberty Head dime, this tiny work of art features a profile of Lady Liberty wearing a winged cap to symbolize freedom of thought.

This legendary Denver coin’s low mintage of just 264,000 pieces led to an estimated 10,000 remaining today. In addition to its rarity, its captivating design and historical significance make it no surprise that this 90% silver rare dime is highly sought after by collectors today.

5. 1931-S Mercury Dime

The 1931-S Mercury dime is a true gem of American coinage, combining sleek artistry with historical significance. 1931 was the final year of production for the Mercury dime before its hiatus during the Great Depression.

This rare dime is an incredible symbol of both poverty and resilience. It represents not only the widespread effects of the Great Depression, as it was the last dime produced for several years, but also the perseverance of the American people through it. Although this coin saw low production numbers, it’s actually not too difficult for collectors to find and enjoy, thanks to the efforts of collectors who saw this coin was worth preserving — even when poverty was so rampant that every cent counted.

6. 1975 No S Roosevelt Dime

Small Change, Big History: 7 Rare Dimes Sought By Collectors (1)

The 1975 No S Roosevelt dime is an iconic rare dime minted in the San Francisco Mint. Unlike other Roosevelt dimes from San Francisco, it was produced without the traditional "S" mint mark. The absent mint mark has made it a highly sought after collectible, as it's estimated that only a handful were mistakenly produced.

While the reason for the missing mint mark has not been confirmed, some speculate that it was a die error that was discovered in time to stop production, but not before a very limited quality of dimes had been produced and circulated. With only two examples known today, the 1975 No S Roosevelt dime has become one of the most valuable dimes in existence.

7. 1968 No S Roosevelt Dime Proof

The 1968 No S Roosevelt dime proof is the very first proof coin to be accidentally struck without the “S” mint mark indicating it was struck at the San Francisco Mint. Like the 1975 No S, the mint mark error was caught early and only a few dozen known examples of this rare dime survived.

With its mirrored finish and sharp, frosted details, the 1968 No S Roosevelt is a rare dime proof recognized for its brilliance. Its scarcity, combined with its historical significance, makes it one of the most valuable dimes you can add to your collection.
