This article describes how to start, stop, or restart the SQL Server Agent Service in SQL Server by using SQL Server Management Studio.
You can configure the SQL Server Agent service to start automatically when the operating system starts, or you can start it manually when you need to complete jobs. You can stop or pause the SQL Server Agent service to suspend jobs, operator notifications, and alerts.
Microsoft SQL Server Agent must be running as a service in order to automate administrative tasks. For more information, see Configure SQL Server Agent.
Object Explorer only displays the SQL Server Agent node if you have permission to use it.
Permissions
To perform its functions, SQL Server Agent must be configured to use the credentials of an account that is a member of the sysadmin fixed server role in SQL Server. The account must have the following Windows permissions:
Log on as a service (SeServiceLogonRight)
Replace a process-level token (SeAssignPrimaryTokenPrivilege)
In SQL Server Configuration Manager, in the left pane, select SQL Server Services. In the results pane, right-click SQL Server (MSSQLServer) or a named instance, and then select Start, Stop, Pause, Resume, or Restart.
This issue occurs because there are multiple job entries in SQL Server. The issue can also occur if you unintentionally set up multiple subscriptions for your reports in the Reporting Services Configuration Manager.
when SQL Server Agent stopped, there will be an information type Event ID 15457 (Configuration option 'Agent XPs' changed from 1 to 0. Run the RECONFIGURE statement to install.) and an information type Event ID 7036 (The SQL Server Agent(instancename) service entered the stopped state.) in the system log.
SQL Server Agent is a component of Microsoft SQL Server which schedules jobs and handles other automated tasks. It runs as a Windows service so it can start automatically when the system boots or it can be started manually.
In general you should have the SQL service running as Automatic so it always runs. The remaining services can be set to Manual so they start on demand. The SQL Server VSS Writer needs to be running as well for backup and recovery. Note that you cannot create a shortcut to the SQL Service because it is a service.
This error may be caused by an unhandled Win32 or C++ exception, or by an access violation encountered during exception handling. Check the SQL error log for any related stack dumps or messages. This exception forces SQL Server to shutdown.
This means that SQL Server was stopped "gracefully" - either manually or by some process (scheduled job, maybe, or application of a service pack) that stops the service. If the login failures are from Windows logins, it could be that your network became unavailable as part of whatever it was that was going on.
Since the Agent is disabled by default, you'll see blank status, signifying that SQL Service is not running. Right-click, then choose Start from the menu to get SQL Server Agent up and running.
This is most likely due to the wrong version of SSMS being installed. If you're absolutely sure you have the correct version of SQL server installed on your server, which you can test by opening services. msc and checking if the SQL Server Agent is present.
Expand the "SQL Server Agent" node in the Object Explorer. Expand the "Error Logs" node under the SQL Server Agent node. Right-click on the "Current" log file and select "View Agent Log". This should open the current SQL Server Agent log, where you can see information about job executions, including failures.
Expand SQL Server Agent, expand Jobs, right-click the job you want to stop, and then click Stop Job. If you want to stop multiple jobs, right-click Job Activity Monitor, and then click View Job Activity. In the Job Activity Monitor, select the jobs you want to stop, right-click your selection, and then click Stop Jobs.
Connect to the Publisher or Distributor you want to disable in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, and then expand the server node. Right-click the Replication folder, and then click Disable Publishing and Distribution.
