Computer data storage:
Often called storage or memory, is a technology consisting of computer components and recording media that are used to retain digital data. It is a core function and fundamental component of computers.
There arethreemain categories ofstoragedevices: optical, magnetic and semiconductor. The earliest of these was the magnetic device. Computer systems began with magneticstoragein the form of tapes (yes, just like a cassette or video tape). These graduated to the hard disk drive and then to a floppy disk.
Internal: Any sort of permanentstoragewhich isinternalto a computingdevice. Stuff like harddrives, SSDs, soldered on flash disks, etc.
External: Similar (or even exactly the same thing) as above. Just that it’s removable without needing to open thedevice.
Direct-Attached: deals with local disks in servers. The networking and high-performance interfaces still do not allow building diskless servers for all solutions. Built using a standardized protocol, Fiber Channel, SANs are designed for high-performance block-mode access to raw devices. SAN-attached devices have no concept of file systems, a notion that remains at the operating system. After being placed in complex and high-end infrastructures, SAN are now making their way into the smaller small and medium business (SMB) market.
Much of the upcoming challenge of the this industry is to propose simple ways of managing relatively complex storage components. The NAS fundamental is the utilization of a data network protocol, IP (and more precisely, TCP/IP) to a file-share protocol. NAS made its way from file-sharing appliances, which rapidly evolved into mature storage components. Each of these storage approaches has pros and cons, all of which depend on the objectives one is pursuing.

What is the 10 storage device? ›
Floppy disks, optical disks (CDs and DVDs), hard disk drives (HDD), flash drives, and solid-state drives are examples of DAS devices (SSD). A storage device is a piece of hardware that can be used to store digital information and programs, such as photographs, videos, audio, and other types of data.
What are 4 main types of secondary storage? ›
Common types of secondary storage
- magnetic storage devices, such as hard disk drives. and tapes.
- optical storage devices, such as CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs.
- solid state storage devices, such as solid state drives (SSDs) It offers better data access rates than magnetic and optical storage. and USB memory sticks.

- Store heavy and frequently used items in the ideal zone - between shoulder and mid thigh.
- Store smaller, lightweight or infrequently used items in lower or higher areas.
- Organise cupboards and storage areas to lessen clutter and allow easy access to shelves.
What are 4 of the most common examples of portable storage devices? ›
Portable Storage Types
- Flash Storage. Flash drives (memory sticks, SD cards, etc.) ...
- USB Storage. There are also USB sticks, or thumb drives. ...
- External Hard Drives. An external hard drive is the hard disk of a computer that's mobile. ...
- External CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Drives.
Is RAM a storage device? ›
Data storage device
There are mainly two types of semiconductor memory: random-access memory (RAM) and read-only memory (ROM). RAM is a temporary data storage domain, whereas ROM serves as a semi-permanent storage domain.
What is the largest storage device? ›
Thus, a hard disk is the storage device with the largest capacity out of the given options.
hard disk, magnetic storage medium for a computer. Hard disks are flat circular plates made of aluminum or glass and coated with a magnetic material. Hard disks for personal computers can store terabytes (trillions of bytes) of information. Data are stored on their surfaces in concentric tracks.
Is a CPU a storage device? ›
Store: The CPU sends the outputs to the random-access memory (RAM) and the hard drive where they can store the data. The CPU can also store data temporarily, but only until the power turns off.
Which component enables your computer to permanently retain a large amount of data? ›
The storage device is the component that enables a computer to permanently retain large amounts of data. It stores data even when the computer is turned off. There are two main types of storage devices: hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs).
What are the advantages of using a HDD? ›
Storage devices
Storage device | Magnetic storage: Hard Disc Drive (HDD) |
---|
Advantages | Relatively cheap per unit of storage. Fast access and retrieval times compared to other storage devices. |
Disadvantages | Can be easily damaged, will slow down and eventually break over time. Slower access than Solid State Drives. |

What is a RAM computer? ›
Random-access memory, or RAM, is one of the most important parts of your computer. It provides high-speed, short-term memory for your computer's CPU. The amount of computer memory you need depends on what you use your computer for, but 12 GB of RAM is a good general minimum standard.
Is a tape drive magnetic? ›
A tape drive is a data storage device that reads and writes data on a magnetic tape. Magnetic-tape data storage is typically used for offline, archival data storage. Tape media generally has a favorable unit cost and a long archival stability.
