What Is a Stock Ticker Symbol? A stock symbol or ticker is a unique series of letters assigned to a security for trading purposes. Stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) can have four or fewer letters.

The PEG ratio is calculated by taking the P/E ratio of a company and dividing it by the year-over-year growth rate of its earnings as an estimate going forward. The lower the PEG ratio, the better the deal you're likely getting, given the stock's estimated future earnings.

The trading volume is a measure of the total shares that have changed hands for a specific time period. The dollar volume is the total value of the shares traded. Dollar volume is calculated by trading volume multiplied by price.

Stock prices are determined by the relationship between buyers and sellers, and dictated by supply and demand. Buyers “bid” by announcing how much they'll pay, and sellers “ask” by stating what they'll accept. When they agree on an amount, it becomes the new stock price.

Shares are traded in pence on the LSE instead of pounds because of the decimalisation of GBP in 1971. At the time there were very few companies with share prices over the £1 level. So share prices were quoted in pence to offer brokers and investors better pricing.
