The Use of Harmful Materials
One of the primary concerns with fast fashion is the materials used in clothing production. As these clothes are meant to be cheap, the brands often opt for petrochemical textiles. These textiles are made from non-renewable fossil fuels and include materials such as polyester, rayon, spandex, nylon, and more. In Bangladesh, over 4 million people are employed in the fast fashion industry, enduring long work hours (up to 18 hours per day) for minimal wages (only 5000 to 8000 Rs per month). These workers toil away in sweatshops, cramped spaces that lack proper safety measures. Tragically, factory accidents occur frequently, resulting in injuries and even deaths. The Rana Plaza incident in 2013, where a building housing five garment factories collapsed, claimed the lives of 1138 people and injured 2600 others.
