The Deadliest Arctic Expeditions (3)

“These sublime and magnificent scenes afforded me the greatest consolation that I was capable of receiving. They elevated me from all littleness of feeling, and although they did not remove my grief, they subdued and tranquillised it.” — Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

Exploration and adventure are rooted in our hearts. However, when the thrill of the unknown mixes with curiosity and optimism, we sacrifice safety and security for discovery and progress. This is true today with technological advances in Artificial Intelligence and commercial space exploration, as it was true at the turn of the 20th century with reaching the edges of the planet.

There is some debate over who first reached the north pole. Many attribute it to the American explorer Robert Peary in 1909, who, on his eighth attempt in 23 years, finally made it. Others say American explorer Dr. Fredererick Cook beat him there, arriving a year earlier. The evidence may discredit both claimants, as it’s possible neither man truly made it there and only thought they did.

But the victors traditionally get the spoils. So let’s cover some failed arctic expeditions.
