Raft foundations, also known as mat foundations, are a type of shallow foundation that is used to support structures with heavy loads. The name "raft" comes from the concept of a structure floating on top of the soil, spreading the weight of the building over a larger area to reduce the pressure on the soil.
The design of a raft foundation involves creating a concrete slab that covers the entire footprint of the building and is reinforced with steel rods. The slab is then poured on top of a layer of compacted soil or gravel, which serves as a platform to distribute the weight of the building evenly. The slab is typically between 300 and 500 millimeters thick, and its surface may be level or sloping. The steel reinforcement helps to provide additional strength and stability to the foundation, and it is typically arranged in a grid pattern to help distribute the weight of the building evenly.
One of the key advantages of raft foundations is that they provide a strong, stable base for the building, even in areas with weak or compressible soils. The large surface area of the slab helps to distribute the weight of the building evenly, reducing the stress on the soil and preventing settling or shifting. In addition, raft foundations can be used to support structures with heavy loads, making them ideal for buildings with large loads such as bridges or high-rise structures.

Another advantage of raft foundations is that they are relatively quick and easy to construct. Unlike traditional deep foundations, which require excavation and drilling to reach the soil, raft foundations can be constructed on the surface, making them ideal for projects with limited access or where excavation is not feasible.
Despite their advantages, raft foundations are not suitable for every type of building. For example, they are not recommended for buildings with light loads, such as small residential structures. Additionally, raft foundations can be more expensive than other types of foundations, as they require a large amount of concrete and steel reinforcement.
