Hye Besties! Cookie cards have become so popular over the last few years! And they are perfect for Valentine’s Day! Today we’re sharing these conversation heart Valentine’s Day cookies, which are irresistibly cute and a great, easy design! They really only require a beautifully flooded cookie with easy-to-mix colors and there are a few different options to add the lettering to make them perfect. These also pair perfectly with our FREE printable cookie cards and tags I’m including for you below!

step 1

You can use THIS recipe to make your delicious heart cookies. You can obviously make any size hearts you’d like but if you’d like to use these for cookie cards, I’d suggest no larger than a 3″ cookie. I used a 3″ cookie for mine and they look adorable!

step 2

THIS is our go-to recipe to make your sugar cookie icing. You can decide how many different colors you’d like to have; I made four. Divide your icing into as many bowls (or make one color at a time reusing the same bowl). I used one drop of ChefMaster gel color per cup of icing to achieve these colors:

  • Lemon Yellow
  • Mint Green
  • Sunset Orange
  • Fuschia

step 3

Once you have achieved your desired colors, you’ll need to thin your icing to begin outlining and flooding. THIS post can help walk you through exactly how to achieve the consistencies you’ll need. I use one consistency for outlining and flooding my cookies for a seamless look and find a 12-15 second icing works best for me.

step 4

Once you have your desired consistency, bag up your icing and prepare your workspace for flooding. It’s critical that you prepare your workspace where you’ll have plenty of room to work and where the cookies can dry undisturbed for the next 24 hours (aka: not the dinner table or kitchen counter). It’s also best to put your cookies on paper towels so that any excess butter from the cookies can soak into the paper towels and not into your icing, which can cause something called “butter bleed”. Lastly, make sure you have your handy scribe ready to work! I have a history of forgetting to grab my scribe until I’ve flooded my first cookie and then have to sprint to get it!

step 5

One color at a time, outline and flood your cookies, perfecting them with your scribe. I outline and immediately flood my cookies to avoid a distinct outline and give them the seamless look. Remember, your scribe is your BEST FRIEND. If your outline isn’t perfect, you can always use your scribe, after the cookie is flooded, to pull the outline and flood out. Also, use more flood than you think you need. If you’re spreading the icing with your scribe to fill it in, you’re not using enough icing and your flood will not be flat. Lastly, and carefully, give your cookie a gentle shake to help settle and smooth out the flood. Now just let these beautiful babies dry, undisturbed, for about 24 hours. TIP: If you use a table fan to gently blow over your cookies while they are first drying, they’ll dry shinier! And if you are using a dehydrator, even better!! They’ll dry quicker and shinier!

step 6

You have a several options for adding the red lettering to finish your conversation hearts:

  • Write with red, edible marker
  • Pipe with red icing
  • Stencil on with red icing
  • Airbrush on with red airbrush color

I LOVE the 3D look of stenciled icing, so I used a stencil from The Cookie Countess to achieve this look. You can find a detailed tutorial and video HERE! Stenciling with royal icing is incredibly icing and FUN, so if you haven’t tried it, I HIGHLY suggest it to up your cookie game!

step 7

Once your lettering is dry, individually bag your cookies and attach to your cookie cards with double-sided tape or a glue dot. Here are the cookie card and Valentine’s Day tag files for you to download and use!
